OLD SCHOOL POLITICS GETS A BRAND-NEW VOICE WHEN IDEALISTIC RAPPER COURTNEY ROSE RUNS FOR OFFICE AS A PUBLICITY STUNT BUT ACTUALLY GETS ELECTED, ON THE SERIES PREMIERE OF 'THE MAYOR,' TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3, ON ABC
Guest Starring Tony-winner for Broadway's "Hamilton" Daveed Diggs as Mac Etcetra and David Spade as Ed Gunt
"Pilot" - Young rapper Courtney Rose (Brandon Micheal Hall, "Search Party") needs his big break. For years he's toiled away in a small inner-city apartment, making music in his junk-filled bedroom closet. Tired of waiting for opportunity to knock, Courtney cooks up the publicity stunt of the century - running for mayor of his California hometown, Fort Grey, to generate buzz for his music career. But his master plan goes wildly awry, ending in the most terrifying of outcomes: an election victory. The series premiere of "The Mayor" airs TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3 (9:30-10:00 p.m. EDT).
Courtney's charisma and outspoken optimism are what helped him get elected as the Mayor, but even though he's an outsider when it comes to politics, he will find that he's actually good at it. Courtney has smarts, swagger and creativity, but has never worked a full-time job in his life. Luckily for him, he has the right people around him to shepherd his growth, both as a person and a politician.
His biggest fan is his mom, Dina Rose (Yvette Nicole Brown, "Community"), who will be there to keep a watchful eye on him and his administration, and is always ready to set him straight if need be. She's a loving mother not only to Courtney but to his best friends as well. His questionably qualified buddies, Jermaine Leforge (Bernard David Jones), the smooth operator, and T.K Clifton (Marcel Spears), the sensitive sweetheart, will serve as his two unconventional political aides.
Valentina Barella (Lea Michele, "Glee") initially was the campaign manager for the losing mayoral candidate, Ed Gunt (David Spade), but changes sides and offers to join Courtney as his chief of staff when she realizes he truly wants to make a difference in his community. Valentina's no-nonsense, straight-laced ways assure him that things will turn out for the best, because she will not settle for anything less than perfect.
As Courtney begins his new journey into the unpredictable world of politics, his mother and best friends, including Valentina, will be completely dedicated to help him succeed. He'll have to learns what it means to be responsible for others while learning what it means to be responsible for himself.
The series stars Brandon Micheal Hall as Courtney Rose, Lea Michele as Valentina Barella, Bernard David Jones as Jermaine Leforge, Marcel Spears as T.K. Clifton and Yvette Nicole Brown as Dina Rose.
Guest starring is Daveed Diggs as Mac Etcetra, David Spade as Ed Gunt, Jillian Armenante as Kitty, Larry Joe Campbell as Dick, Jillian Armenante as Kitty and Anabel Munoz as Gabby Montoya.

We saw the premiere of this a week or so ago, and it was actually funny and charming. My wife and her sister ate it up.

Watched the premier. A few chuckles, although most were by way of the trailer. May check out a few more, but not sure if we’ll stick with it.

The Mayor was supposed to return next week but ABC has pulled it from the schedule. I won't miss it.

Maybe Yvette Nicole Brown can make more appearances on Talking Dead now.

I watched a couple episodes, and it was OK, but not something I’d make time for. Mainly I was looking for a 20-minute time-killer before bed.

One of the many projects that would have worked far better as a movie and couldn't really make it work as a series. Even a short 13 episode series. We didn't even make it though the original 9 eps (I think we watched 4 or 5). Into the DVR trash can they go.

Bummer. It was clean and the family really liked it a lot. Hoping it gets picked up elsewhere.

The sad thing is despite my frustration that we will not get to see all the episodes of The Mayor that are already in the can, the re run of Modern Family that will take its place will probably get better ratings for that time slot.
This is the reason why despite all of our groaning that shows like Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory are long past their prime the networks fight like hell (and shell out beacoup bucks) to keep them going for 75 and counting seasons...because reruns of a behemoth sitcom from its 10th or later season can easily destroy that of a freshman show trying to get off the ground. Ah well, such is life and I am aware that not every new show can survive (otherwise there would be 10,000+ shows on the air).
