That was the firsts time I was interested in the story of Kevin's downward spiral. It was well done. I thought the doctor pegged Kevin's addiction and was going to try to help him. I'm glad they didn't have Kevin go with the underage girl, that would have been a really bad choice, especially in this political climate.

come on, that's what this show is great in doing. Making you believe it's going one way and then suddenly zigging another, then slamming into you with the feels like those football players did to young kevin.

I liked the Kevin episode and was so glad he didn't do anything with that underage girl. I have the feeling that the doctor he hooked up with will eventually try to ruin his reputation later on.

Milo Ventimiglia is a likeable guy but his lack of acting chops showed in the last episode.

Good episode, and I liked how they weaved in footage we've already seen. But I'm always a sucker for the seeing-the-same-thing-from-different-perspectives device.

Agreed, I watched the 'Kevin' episode last night and really liked it. Been rolling my eyes as he wallows through this season, but this episode gave it some needed perspective. The last few episodes have all been pretty good - after this season got off to a slow start.

This show reduces me to a puddle every every week. I love their way of telling this story.
Wonder what they have in store for Randall next week?

First time I've ever really disliked Toby. Not only was that package distribution center scene totally ridiculous (nobody is allowed in those areas, and they are always fill of people) but the attitude he walked in with should have never got him anywhere. And then of course there was all the Kate stuff...
Expecting Randall's episode next week to be back to the usual norm.

So Jack is supposed to be in his early 50s at the time of these episodes (college trip), right? He would be 73 in present time if he were alive. I'm guessing that Rebecca was at least a few years younger than him.

I liked the Deja plotline better than I thought I would when it started (I thought the mom showed up after breaking out of jail ), but I expected more of the high-school story in this episode.

At least they're opening it up to showing a lot more Jack parallel story arc with Kevin's potential DUI charges and battle with addiction. As trope filled as it is, it seems like something good can come of that. Also, the Deja story served its purpose in getting us to the potential future orphan boy.

This weeks episode was stellar, other than the Kevin bit at the end...

I was wondering about his age given bring in his service in Vietnam. I could never remember when the kids were born ... 1980ish was it? Weren't they the same again (36?) when the show started when Jack adopted?

The 3 kids turned 36 last year (2016). So they were born in 1980. Jack turned 36 on the same day. So he was born in 1944. My father was born in 1945 and he served in Vietnam so that checks out.
Assuming Randall is probably 17 when he's looking at colleges, those scenes are probably 1997 or 1998. So jack should be around 53.
Milo is actually 40 now. I never realized until this episode that "old" Jack was already into his 50s.

Yeah, he was born in mid 40's to put him at that 53 age at the time of his death... though, honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if it's revealed he didn't die in the fire but was actually taken in out of the time stream and will reappear in modern day to surprise everyone and get us to cry some more.

I continue to be impressed by the young people they are able to cast on this show. The girl that played Deja, and the boy that played teenage Randall, were awesome in this episode.

Last night's episode (titled "The Fifth Wheel") was brutal on the feels... warning, grab a box of tissues.
Sure somethings are telegraphed and cliche, but dang... those writers know how to tie events together.
Miguel had the most important line of the night with his reference to his place in Toby's "Star Wars" analogy.
Bravo!
.... and congrats to Sterling K. Brown on his well deserved GG win.

Watched it last night. Pretty amazing TV and acting in this one. I'm sure there were things that most people could relate with in one way or another, between all the characters and what they were going through. I think my wife started crying like 4 separate times; waterworks at the end when Moore left the bed to go lay with Kevin.

Great episode, probably the best of the series to date. The best moment for me was Randall's tension-breaking line near the end "so it's settled - I'm Mom's favorite".
