True Lies (CBS) - S: Steve Howey, Ginger Gonzaga - premieres 3/1/23

From comingsoon.net;

James Cameron will develop and produce a television series based on his 1994 film, True Lies, reports Deadline.

Rene Echevarria, the creator of "The 4400," will serve as the showrunner with Cameron operating as a producer.

On the television front, Cameron has developed and produced "Dark Angel," and also took the director's chair for the series finale.
Personally, I'd rather see a sequel than a weekly television series. It seems to me as if the 'Spy-in-the-Suburbs' type show has been done too many times in the past few years.

So the material was not okay for a sequel after September 11th but now it's great for a tv series?

So they still haven't released a decent DVD of the film but are thinking of a TV series?

I think the concept is good for TV series, but I agree it's somewhat been done on other shows.

I figure Schwarzenegger is out, but let's hope Tom Arnold is available!

Assuming we'll see it in 3D since Cameron is involved?

So because I enjoyed 4400, I should automatically enjoy this concept as well?

I'd have thought Joss Whedon would have been all over this. This obviously would have been the perfect angle for him to cast Eliza Dushku again.

Have you seen Arnold and Jamie lately? Both have hit the wall pretty hard. The window for a sequel has not only closed, it's been boarded up and nailed shut.

And the whole suburban spy thing has been done to death as a theme, in TV and movies. Probably the first two seasons of ALIAS did it the best.

Me too with the exception of the shitty last season when they could not figure out if the show was going to return or not...

I would not watch a True Lies TV series.

They should just do a spinoff with Bill Paxton's character trying various outlandish schemes to get laid.

Deadline.com already reported that ABC greenlit a Pilot. Keep in mind this doesn't mean this show will definitely be made next season. They still have to write/cast the Pilot and the suits at ABC have to watch it 1st to see if it's any good. 3 years ago, ABC greenlighted a Pilot for Mr. and Mrs Smith and most people were certain they were going to greenlight it to series, but they passed on it.

There's a world of difference between having Doug Liman on board and having James Cameron on board. Now obviously if they don't cast well or the pilot sucks, then ABC will probably walk away.

But Cameron doesn't put out much crap. He's a bankable commodity that a lot of people want to work with. Sure, Dark Angel didn't find an audience, but the quality was there.

Still, there are always sure fire pilots that miss the cut. The Rockford Files remake at NBC earlier this year was a shoo-in until the pilot came back and tanked.

True Lies TV series in development at CBS

http://deadline.com/2017/09/true-lie...nt-1202170748/

True Lies, James Cameron’s hit 1994 action comedy movie, is headed to television. Fox has given a put pilot commitment to an hourlong reboot of the film, which comes from McG, Arrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim, Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV.

Guggenheim is writing the adaptation, with McG set to direct. The two are executive producing alongside Cameron and Jon Landau via Lightstorm, as well as Rae Sanchini and Mary Viola.

20th Century Fox TV, whose sister feature studio produced the movie, and where McG is under an overall deal, is the studio. 20th TV had been trying to put together a True Lies series with McG since last season.

McG will focus on the project after recently exiting over creative differences from Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s upcoming drama series 9-1-1 for Fox, on which he was to serve as director/executive producer.

The 1994 film True Lies, written, directed and produced by Cameron via his Lightstorm Entertainment, starred Arnold Schwarzengger, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold, Art Malik and Bill Paxton. A loose remake of the 1991 French comedy film La Totale, the film followed U.S. government agent Harry Tasker (Schwarzenegger), who balances his life as a spy with his familial duties.

True Lies was a global box office hit and earned Curtis a Golden Globe.

McG directed the pilot for the successful TV reboot of another action comedy movie title, Lethal Weapon, for Fox. He executive produces that series, from WBTV, which has been renewed for a second season.

Via his Wonderland banner, McG also executive produces the long-running CW series Supernatural as well as Freeform’s Shadow Hunters. On the film side he’s partnered with Netflix on The Babysitter movie, which is being released next month, and is in production on I Feel Pretty starring Amy Schumer.

Green Lantern scribe Guggenheim co-created and serves as an executive producer on the CW’s DC series Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow.

They fucked up not doing a sequel to this. Probably one of the best, if not the best, 90's action flicks.

I'm all for it, if it results in a Blu-Ray release of the movie for a tie-in.

In the 90's, we had: Terminator 2, Die Hard 3, True Lies, Speed.

JC's reason for a long time was the post-9/11 mockery of Muslim terror groups. But I could think of a few ways around that.

This could be a fun show. I'm not going to write it off. But TV action shows have their own style. They can't budget to get the production values the way you see them in a 2 hour movie.

McG just announced today that he's writing and developing a True Lies TV show for Disney Plus. He got the blessing from James Cameron. He said in this clip maybe there's room for an Arnold appearance.

Did you know that True Lies is actually a remake of the French film "La Totale"?

(I believe I have now repeated this 23 times since I've joined DVDTalk. )
