Watched both tonight - this is a lot of fun, I'm hoping this gets a decent run of episodes as there's a lot of tropes for them to hit. I'm liking that Discovery will have a lighter companion piece as it looks to be on the dark side of storytelling.
The conversations in the apartment/cage were spot on, almost a bit uncomfortable.

I found the 2nd episode amusing.
I did crack up at the end when Alara traded reality TV and they showed clips from the Real Housewives of NJ in order to free Ed and Kelly.
The whole egg thing with Bortus and his partner was a little weird though.
With a show like this that's trying to figure it if it wants to be more drama or more parody, not surprised we're getting lots of knee jerk reactions saying it sucked etc.

Just watched episode 2 and it has hit a good balance. The first episode was more comedic and this 2nd one was more serious. Works for me.

Based on the second episode I'm guessing Seth MacFarlane has never been drunk or high.
As a side note, I think this show is popular enough here to have episode threads. Thoughts?

There's well over 100 posts for 2 episodes, but it's inevitable that there are going to be some dead weeks ahead, especially now with it on Thursdays against live NFL football starting tonight. Plus, it's facing lots more competition in the coming weeks. People are going to start falling behind.

I think this next episode (tonight) is going to tilt a little more serious as they discuss what can be done with the new baby being female and keeping things single-gender.
I mean.. as serious as you can get from a guy who laid an egg.

I'm with you there. Unless interest dies off it would be far better for these the threads to be episode specific. Quite frankly, any concern for posting frequency being a gauge on the type of thread is pretty funny given how many episode specific threads go by without any responses at all. That said, I like the idea of all threads being episode specific, whether they get responses or not.

The Kermit gag was the highlight for me.
I thought the Calivon were going to be the Orville equivalent of the Borg. They were supposed to be this highly technologically advanced race, dangerous to even make contact with, and yet they're ships were more crude looking than the Union's, and they looked like the average alien on the Orville.
And why did the Calivon even bother with the trade? They could have just took the whole ship right? And had whatever treasure Alara was trying to bargain with.
Normally I don't mind these things in a comedy or parody show but this show isn't really funny to me.
Everything else is great, and this really does feel like Star Trek, but it's not good enough to be taken serious, and not funny enough to laugh at. This story was done better on the Twilight Zone.

I admit the final scene with all the reality TV was pretty funny. It would be cool if we find out that in five years (or whatever) that the super advanced civilization dumbed down as a result of watching all that garbage.

Actually, that was a pretty good episode in a way. The criticism of stars of reality TV being inmates in a zoo was pretty interesting.

Why does DJariya hate episode threads?! In the day and age of binge-watching, episode specific threads make sense. I hate having to completely stay out of threads because I watch a show a little slower or even well down the path.

I don't believe there's a law against episode threads? I say anyone feel free to make one if you want.\
The FAQ says "This area thrives on episode-specific threads for TV shows."

I felt episode 3 was boring. And well, that's about it.

I'm not a Trek fan but I'm mainly watching this for Adrienne Palicki. Thought episode 1 was alright, episode 2 was not great and episode three was awful. Yay an entire episode devoted to transgender rights. Yes I know that Roeddenbery used Trek to tell social commentary but that was a different time. Today we can't escape politics it's all around us and no one needs to have liberal(or conservative) beliefs beating them over their head anymore even though liberal beliefs are the worst offenders. It was ridiculous when Supergirl did it in season 2 and it was even more ridiculous here.

Even though the episode dealt with changing gender, I didn't see it as a "transgender rights" episode. It had more to do with how people deal with cultures and beliefs different from their own, and making choices for those that can't choose for themselves. They never even made it obvious who was right and who was wrong. They gave arguments for both sides.
I applaud the show for doing something different.

Pretty funny when McFarlane was asked if he'd be ok with a planet that put all females to death and he had to think about it second.

Episode 3 is what caused the critics to go to town on the show...really, the episode was just there, not mind numbingly bad or good. I did enjoy the boxing between Alara and Bortus. Bring on episode 4. Also, Variety notes the ratings dropped like a rock in its move to Thursday, hopefully, things will stabilize and we get at least a full season.

This is the one that made it most feel like a ST ripoff. It wasn't terrible by any means, but definitely wasn't up to par with first 2 episodes.

Episode 3 to me just dragged on.. and on..
Here's the problem for me:
1) I don't know these characters well enough to really care yet. This would probably have been a better episode late in the season
2) In my opinion the ending was predictable from the start. I didn't think they were going to change their entire way of being for one person born on a ship somewhere - just because some outsiders don't like it.
3) The balance of humor/drama wasn't in this one for me. They tried to play it too seriously - for a serious topic. But like robin2099 said.. I don't really want to watch it for political stuff. I'd prefer more comedy and less politics. But that's just a person preference.

If the Moclan males lay eggs wouldn't that make them female by default? What do the females do that makes them female?

I watched the first episode at lunch today and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. However, it seems to have a bit of an identity crisis as to what it wants to be. I may watch a few more here and there.

Episode three was just weird and dull, the type of episode you do after a show has been on the air for three or four seasons.
Fox clearly wants people to believe this is some kind of Star Trek spoof, but it's really Seth MacFarlane's desperate wish to be a Star Trek: TNG cast member. I now understand why he hires Patrick Stewart in everything.

Thought episode 3 was great and no, I did not see that ending coming.
The Beyonce lyrics gag was hilarious.
