Re: The Ken Burns PBS Documentary Thread

Usually the stuff is viewable free online for the week or two after it airs, then it goes to Passport-only status. Some shows seem to always be freely available and others just go away, though. I assume it is based on copyrights and home video marketability. I remember missing an episode of Soundbreaking (not Ken Burns, but a terrific series by the way) so I went online to watch it and it was completely gone within a week. Just clips and previews were available. I ended up getting it from the library .

Re: The Ken Burns PBS Documentary Thread

I've only seen the first 3 episodes of the Vietnam War series, and they have been great, but I've been catching up on other Burns films as well. Finished "The Central Park 5" yesterday.

I've seen "The War" but need to watch "The Civil War" and "Baseball"

Re: The Ken Burns PBS Documentary Thread

The last time I checked its on the PBS website, in both the Broadcast and unedited versions. I only watched one episode, and want to get back and watch it. I plan on buying the blurays, but don't have the money right now.

Edit: I just checked its on Amazon, and Itunes. You have to be a PBS Member to view it online.

They're on Youtube in HD. Note that these eps are the Vietnamese version: they are subtitled in Vietnamese, and the talking head interviews with Vietnamese people are not subtitled in English, so you'll be missing out on what they're saying.

FYI, now on Netflix as of today. All 10 episodes and 18+ hours.

Not a series I would "binge" watch. Each episode is really deep and thought provoking.

Ken Burns has allowed PBS to stream his documentary Baseball for free on the PBS app and other PBS digital platforms.

If you've never seen it and like baseball, it's an amazing and extremely comprehensive film about it's history.

Ken Burns' Baseball starts off amazing but slowly declines in quality as it progresses closer to modern day baseball. The pre-World War II coverage is epic and mesmerizing. It's awesome if you are a fan of the Yankees, Dodgers or Red Sox. Not as much fun for other fans.

Re: The Ken Burns PBS Documentary Thread

FYI, Most if not all of Burns' documentaries can be watched on the new PBS documentaries channel on Amazon Prime. It's $4/month. It looks like Netflix no longer has the rights to his documentaries.

Re: The Ken Burns PBS Documentary Thread

So I don't know if any of you have any interest, but the new Muhammed Ali documentary series from Ken Burns just aired last week on PBS. It's 4 parts and about 2 hours per episode.

I just finished the 1st episode and it's fantastic. Very thorough. I would expect nothing less from Ken Burns. It's a pretty huge time commitment. If you missed it, you can stream it for free on the PBS app.

If you're not even remotely interested in boxing, then this is probably not for you. But, I have a decent interest in boxing history as my father used to watch boxing all the time in our house and got me into all the legends like Ali.

Not 100% sure, but I believe this documentary took Burns and his crew around 2-3 years to make.

Re: The Ken Burns PBS Documentary Thread

I watched it all on the PBS app, It's astoundingly good. Very thorough, shows his life warts and all. And once again, I teared up in episode 4 when they got to the Atlanta Olympics torch lighting. Gets me every time.

Re: The Ken Burns PBS Documentary Thread

I watched all 4 parts as it as it aired. I didn't think there would be enough material for 8 hours but it was fascinating and I was not bored for a single minute. I became aware of Ali in about 74 or 75 when he was already more of a "celebrity who boxed." A lot of the comedians of the day did impressions of him and he was a larger-than-life TV personality. My dad always liked him and I remember watching some of the fights live on TV. It was interesting learning his back story and some of the less-attractive aspects of his personality. I thought it was very good.

I have seen multiple Ali docs over the years so they are rehashing all the stuff we already know

How do you know that? This film covers over 50 years of his life and career in almost 8 hours. No other film about him has done that.

It's a huge time commitment like I said, but it's so well done. This is the guy who made the Vietnam War, Civil War and Baseball series. This isn't someone who half asses his work. He took years to make this and is meticulously researched.

If you're just too lazy to watch it, then that's on you.

I was really blown away with the one he did about the Holocaust. That one really explained a lot.

Re: The Ken Burns PBS Documentary Thread

First episode was well done as expected. Some big names doing the narration.

After he played him in HBO series, I love that Giamatti is voicing John Adams.

Re: The Ken Burns PBS Documentary Thread

I've only recently started watching Burns' documentaries with my son. It started with National Parks, and then The Dust Bowl. Not sure what we'll do next, probably The War.
