Was debating doing episode threads, but there isn't enough traffic in this forum and subscribers to Starz in this forum to make it worth it. I'm assuming only a small handful will be watching.
Starz announced today that the highly-anticipated eight-episode first season of FremantleMedia North America produced STARZ Original Series "American Gods," adapted from Neil Gaiman's acclaimed contemporary fantasy novel, will make its network premiere on Sunday, April 30th at 9PM ET/PT.
"American Gods" posits a different kind of war brewing - one between Old Gods and New. The traditional Old Gods, with mythological roots from around the world, fear irrelevance as their believers die off or are seduced by the money, technology, and celebrity offered by the New Gods. Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) is an ex-con who, left adrift by the recent death of his wife, becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to conman Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane). But in truth, Mr. Wednesday is a powerful old deity, on a cross-country mission to build an army and reclaim his lost glory.

Yeah. I let my Srarz subscription lapse. Likely won't be watching this as it airs.

As usual with STARZ, the episode is already available on the app. It usually goes live in the morning on the day it airs.

Premier is a little odd.
Something about it is off.
A Little too stylized, the frame rate is weird and everyone sounds
like they are dubbed.
Shadow Moon's voice sounds like it doesn't match the actor.

Bryan Fuller's Hannibal took some effort to get used to. I felt really strange watching some of those episodes. Not many films make me feel like that. That's what makes it so memorable. So not surprised you have that criticism.

It's been about 15 years since I read the book, so it's a little hard for me to compare the two.
OK start to the show. Ian McShane is awesome as usual.

I know nothing about the book nor the writer.
I gave it a shot and watched. I'm in for the time being, though I feel the lead will have to grow on me.

I loved it. I really enjoy the stylized artificial feel to it, it helps getting the tone of the series and with the premise being more believable in that setting. Had the same sort of tone as Preacher

The book is one of my favorites, and so far I think they're doing it justice. I know that Neil Gaiman was heavily involved with the production and Bryan Fuller is just the man to turn something so rich and bizarre into compelling TV. I'm still sad Hannibal is gone, but this makes up for it.

Pretty intense 1st episode. I'd like to see how things play out.
I read the book a long time ago so I have vague recollections that are sparked by watching the show.

Never read the book or watched Hannibal. Bizarre episode to say the least!

Enjoyed the first episode overall, but am a little confused on what we are to make of that opening with the Norseman. Is there some kind of to connection to something else in that episode, or something to come later?

It's part of the larger narrative of the story. I believe there will be other coming to America stories throughout the series.

Wife and I really enjoyed the first episode. We've never heard of the book before, but I may check it out now.

In relation to the opening scene I posted about? I'm familiar with origin of Wednesday (and that character in general), but not the connection to that opening scene.
Had I not read an article about the series, part of which went into that scene, I'm not sure I would have immediately put together what was going on there. I guess they did what they could given the limits on content (even on pay cable), but it was a very strange way to convey what was happening given they couldn't literally do it from the POV of the guy.

I re-watched that opening scene and I did indeed miss the "To America" lead in and the "Wōdan" name drop. This is definitely one of those series that must be watched very closely for the references.
