Here's a key paragraph from the Hollywood Reporter story that I overlooked:
Sounds like NBC just changed their minds.
Looks like the profit thing was a non-factor.
Sony initially offered a financial incentive for the show to return but sources say NBC ultimately thought about more of the creative and the type of programming they'd want to invest in and picked it up without changing the terms of the co-production. (Timeless is a co-production of Sony and NBC's Universal Television.) The series also ranked as the fourth-highest scripted series when all delayed viewing is factored in.

Uncancellled! Awesome! More family friendly? It wasn't family unfriendly to begin unless it means dumbing down the scripts.

Hopefully Abigail Spencer is so happy she is moved to film a couple sequels to her self pleasuring series.

I assume "family friendly" means they're taking out both the action and anything resembling complex or ongoing plot. It wouldn't do to challenge the kiddies. I would expect both Rittenhouse and any exploration of paradox or butterfly effect to be minimal or nonexistent. Pure episodic procedural.

They're not dumbing the show down to make it for toddlers and elementary school kids.
You can make a reasonable show at 8pm that the whole family can still enjoy with action and some intrigue. I'm betting they are going to tackle some more historic storylines.

Folks, I think family friendly in this context means that it is an educational show that you can watch with kids.

Great to see. I do hope they do NOT write season two with a cliffhanger without knowing 100% that it is returning. Got another chance, NO cliffhangers!!!!

I read about the cancelation several weeks ago, when it was a "confirmed" rumor.
Really glad to read here about the un-cancelation.

Fans had little to do with renewal.

I am wondering if this was one of the big keys to it coming back.

Earlier this year it seemed that the fan campaign to save NBC’s cancelled historical time travel drama “Timeless” was a success.
Despite very good reviews and a strong fanbase, the network cut the series due to low ratings and an overcrowded schedule. Then, in a last minute decision, seemed to change their mind and renewed it.
Speaking at an executive session with the Television Critics Association this week, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt says it wasn’t the fan outcry that caused the network to change its decision, though it did help in a small way:
“What I say to the fans when they come out in droves when we cancel a show is ‘Where were you when we had the show on the air in helping us build this into a huge ratings success?’. The outcry from fans, I don’t know how many there really were. Like all things on social media, it’s a lot smaller than you think. But we’re happy to know they cared and love the show. We love the show.”
NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke adds that “Timeless” was a regretful cancellation and what the fan support did do is give faith to NBC to stick with a series they thought could be a winner:
“We loved the show. There were some financial challenges with the show. There were ratings challenges with the show. To be able to have a fan base that’s so engaged in the show just kept bombarding us with feelings that we had about the show, I like to say it was a collaborative passion swell that made us open it up and look at it again. Could we figure out a way to make this make sense? I’m so glad that we did. Genre fans get very excited and noisy about things. I love that. That’s why we love to program for them. It was a good story.”
The series has shifted its shooting locale from Vancouver to Los Angeles and scored close to $10 million in tax credits. As a result, the ten episode second season will be able to maintain the same budget per episode as the first season.
“Timeless” will be back midseason in 2018.

Yeah I think scoring $10M in California tax credits was a little influential than some fan tweets or emails.

I missed the uncancellation news so I was surprised when I was reading the Wikipedia page for whatever reason and saw that it was still alive.

The answer is: they obviously weren't participants in the obsolete and in my opinion grossly misleading Nielsen system. Why are you still using Nielsen if it doesn't reflect the true extent of your audience?

So weird, yet they have no problem renewing something like Will and Grace before the revival season even airs. What if it tanks hard? It's not like NBC - or any of the networks really - are pulling in the volume of viewers they Used to.
There was a neat thank you video from Comic Con too: https://youtu.be/q4QCbQXHODQ
