Re: Hairspray LIVE (NBC) - 12/7/16

This airs tonight. I like how NBC is advertising themselves as the network that ushered in the live TV musical. They know Grease on FOX was more popular than anything they've done. I have no interest in this.

NBC is assembling an all-star team of Broadway's finest and most talented creatives for its upcoming production of "Hairspray Live," the network's latest stage musical following the phenomenal success of "The Wiz Live." The telecast will air Wednesday, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. "In keeping with our desire to bring the best of Broadway to our live musicals, we've assembled the Broadway dream team of Tony Award winners for 'Hairspray Live,'" said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment. "We're thrilled to have director Kenny Leon, who knocked 'The Wiz Live' way out of the park, and Jerry Mitchell, the original choreographer of 'Hairspray' and who is the director of two smash hit musicals running on Broadway right now.

I'll definitely give it a shot, -it's a fresher show than some of the others that have been done. So far, though, "Grease" is the only one that pretty much worked for me.

It took 75 years, but soon the Pearl Harbor attack will no longer be the worst thing to have happened on December 7.

Looking forward to this. One of my all time favorite musicals. Good, energetic music. It's one of the few movie-to-stage adaptations that gets it right. I hated Spamalot and The Producers. They were simply the movie with songs. Hairspray used maybe 2 lines from the movie and all original music.

I mainly watch these things so I can catch the inevitable screw-ups and awkward moments. Tracy's mic kept cutting out during the opening number... Ariana tripped on a chair during "I Can Hear the Bells"... I think the lights cut out once or twice.

I fell asleep during Martin Short's song, so I didn't catch the last hour or so. I thought the girl playing Amber was great. She really pulled off the prissy bitch role, but still made her comedic and fun to watch. The new Tracy was okay... good singing voice, but not much screen presence. Fierstein makes for a much better Edna than creepy Travolta did in the movie version. Also nice to see Ricki Lake pop in for a cameo.

There were also a few quick cuts to the wrong camera, and, yeah, they were "premature" on a couple of cues for the lights. I think the show would have been unbearable to watch "Live' with the commercials. The show was clearly influenced by Fox's presentation of "Grease", in that it copied a lot of their physical production and presentation style.

8.9M viewers. Lowest ratings for an NBC musical yet.

It's hard to tell, -it definitely sounded pre-recorded (which might have been for "protection" because of all the moving elements).

They also cut away from Kristin Chenoweth as she was about to take her bow, and went to a shot of the next two actors.

NBC does say that the show did better than it's average programming. Next up is "Bye, Bye, Birdie" which at least has a strong marquee star with Jennifer Lopez (and I'm sure they'll add more). It's a great show (love the film!), but horribly dated (and was done on ABC a few years ago to little effect with Jason Alexander).
