SNL (S42E06) -- 11/12/16 -- H: Dave Chappelle -- MG: Tribe Called Quest

This should be interesting... and Dave Chappelle looks like he's been hitting the gym.

I haven't watched SNL in probably a decade. Chappelle is the first guest in a really long time that will get me to tune in.

The last SNL I watched was when Louis CK hosted, so I'll DVR this one. Chappelle's funniest standup bit is about the baby selling crack in the neighborhood 3am in the morning. When he yells, "Hey...baby...what are you doing?"

I wonder if Alec is going to do Trump long-term now or if they'll find another cast member.

Guessing tonight will be the final time we see Kate doing Hillary - shame, she's really good at it.

That will be interesting. It's possible that after the inauguration, they won't do him that often, barring some major ongoing event - like the Monica Lewinsky thing, which had John Goodman making numerous appearances as Linda Tripp.

The big issue might not be the need for him to come on every week, but rather having to be "on call" if something really mockable happens. I mean, he can't go off to do a movie or something (except in the summer) and then leave that to do Trump. It's not like Jimmy Fallon, who works in the same building.

Maybe they need to find someone who is retired for the most part.

Perhaps, Daryl Hammond? He was a good Trump.

It was brilliant.

I was wrong. the first sketch was great.

The news was eeally good and the Inside SNL bit was very very good.
I loved the press conference.

Without a doubt, Chapelle carried the show.

I thought Kate, as Hillary, singing Hallelujah was pretty touching: combining the election and a tribute to Leonard Cohen.

Chapelle was great, though a tad rusty. Loved his old show, even got the DVDs. Nice to see his old characters again. His Lil Jon still cracks me up.

I wonder if last night was a record for the "N" word on SNL? I think Chapelle dropped it at least a half-dozen times in his opening monologue alone.

Also, according to a story on Deadline.com, Baldwin only agreed to do Trump up until the election, so they'll either need to re-negotiate something with him or look for someone else.

Surprisingly dull show considering the host. Guess I had too high expectations.

Chappelle's monologue was hilarious and poignant. Some of the sketches were pretty funny too. This was one of the better episodes of SNL That I've seen lately.

I normally don't watch SNL, but the Walking Dead/Negan skit with the Chappelle show characters was hilarious:

Like every other liberal in the US, the people at SNL never thought Trump had a chance, so letting Baldwin come on for several weeks and really trash the guy was a win-win. But they figured it was like Tina Fey's Palin--only necessary for a couple months.

It would be nice if they could actually find a regular cast member to play Trump. It does not say much about your cast if you have to keep farming out the most important topical characters.

If that was the last time we see McKinnon as Hillary that was a great way to go out.

Maybe you thought Chapelle would bring controversy, but the show was pretty funny throughout. Chris Rock's appearance saved the first sketch, but otherwise it was the Chapelle/McKinnon show, and that was all right by me.

I'd much prefer we never see anybody play Trump on SNL again.

It is kind of like when Reagan was POTUS.

With Ford, Carter, Bush I, Clinton, Bush II, and Obama, SNL would play up some comical side of their personalities, but they did not ever portray them as terrible people.

SNL has made their stand that Trump is an absolutely awful human being, and they will have a hard time turning him into the basically likeable and humorous figure that they have cast all (except Reagan) the POTUSes as being.

After Baldwin eviscerated Trump with Lorne's blessing, they pretty much have to present President Trump as Slimer in a bad wig.

I always thought Phil Hartman's Reagan was funny. He would meet with little kids on camera and be sweet Reagan, and then behind closed doors he was calculating cold Reagan. Maybe it's s testament to Hartman's likeability as he played a loveable Clinton too.

I just think it's impossible today to do good political comedy because it's too partisan. Nobody I know has a sense of humor anymore among my Trump and Obama friends. It's really toxic among a split country these days.

The thing is that there's ALWAYS about a 50/50 split among the electorate. For heaven's sake, when Reagan trounced Walter Mondale, Mondale STILL got 40 percent of the popular vote.

Shouldn't SNL be blaming themselves somewhat for Trump winning? They had him host which probably only helped his popularity at that point.

Also, people probably enjoyed Baldwin's Trump enough they figured they'd rather get 4 more years of that than McKinnon's Clinton. Their depiction just seemed to make the real Trump more entertaining.

No doubt, but the difference is everyone is in their own bubble when it comes to getting their news.

My conservative friends watch FoxNews and log on Drudgereport everyday as they avoid late night shows because they think they are too liberal.

My Liberal friends watch MSNBC and log on Huffington Post and enjoy Colbert cause he openly goes after Trump. They don't like when a show like SNL makes a Democrat look bad.

30 years ago we all watched the same news so nobody was in a bubble and only heard 'their' opinion. That's why a Republican like Reagan and a Democrat like LBJ can get 60% of the vote. Partisan politics was more local back then as voters were more willing to vote for the other party in a Presidential Election.

I don't think we would have gotten it anyway, because I doubt that McKinnon will be there much longer. This is her 5th (full) season, she has become a lot more well known, and she's doing movies. I could see her leaving after next season, maybe one more after that at the most.
