SNL (S42E02) -- 10/08/16 -- H: Lin-Manuel Miranda -- MG: twenty one pilots
Coming off a great show last weekend, I'm looking forward to this one too:
I only know the musical guest because they had a song on the Suicide Squad soundtrack... so here's Heathens:

I must be getting old or something, because this is the first time I can recall where I have no fucking clue who both the host AND musical guest are.

It's been mentioned in Otter on a few occasions. Plus it was in the news when Miranda was having his last appearance and tickets were crazy expensive.

Looks like the show blew it's load right out of the gate last week. This week was awful. Back to the old SNL after a stellar season opener.

I bailed after the news segment, but yeah, up to that, this week's show as awful. I could've written a better opening segment regarding Trump's week than what they came up with. Miranda's opening bit was pretty good though.

Count me as another one who has never heard of the host and musical guest - which is probably a first for me as well. Although I have heard of the musical Hamilton, I had to Google his name to find out that he's in it and adapted it for the stage.
After checking out his IMDB page, I remembered him from Modern Family as the guy who was trying to get Jay to invest in his doggy-treats/training business idea.
The monologue song thingy was well done, but the episode was pretty bad.

That being said, the show was generally weak. I have a huge man crush on Lin-Manuel, but they wasted is talent.

I loved Miranda's opening rap/song number, but pretty much nothing after.
After SNL fired Pharoh and Killam, I think SNL is really deficient in male talent now. Keenan Thompson and Bobby Moynahan doing a lot to of heavy lifting that they just aren't up to.
Lots of talented ladies, but pretty sparse with the guys. The imbalance is showing now.

Writers:
Lin-Manuel Miranda (written by)
Ron Chernow (based upon a book by)
I know very little about Hamilton... even though I live in a city with the same name.

I knew the show was in trouble after the camping sketch that followed the monologue - that's something that would have just made the cut for the end of the night.

I only know 21 Pilots because my kid is a fan. They had a song on the Suicide Squad soundtrack.

The sketch where the class is burned out because all the substitute teachers keep trying to reach them through hip hop was very funny.
21 Pilots are dirt bags and their pretentious music sucks, but I thought it was adorable how excited they were to be on SNL. You could see they wanted to smile bigger than a prom queen, but they were stifling it because it's against the ethos of their stupid douche image to actually smile.

Kyle Mooney has appeared on Drunk History and some other shows so he might be around for a while.
Somebody should give Keenan Thomspon a sitcom so he can finally leave SNL. The same with Moynihan.
All of their contemporaries from the early to mid 2000's left the show and they are still here.

The dude literally grew *up* doing this, what with All That - most kids, hell, every other SNL cast member ever throughout all of history grew up doing... anything, and everything, except playing in a sketch variety comedy series... as a kid! I realize he's had his fair share (and that is a big share, at that!) of haters+detractors over the many years.
But just the same, he's always been tragically underappreciated and ofttimes overly constrained into repetitively cookie-cutter usage as different versions of the same one and some odd change character - however, Kenan at his very absolute SNL best, outside of Steve Harvey, has been the utter rarities where he has been allowed to more fully break the mold of that singular dimensionality.
And yet, since most SNL viewers mainly only know Kenan as this insanely long run of basically one single, endless character, they've grown to ascribe blame+criticism for that same oneness to Kenan, unjustly so given blame more squarely rests with whatever head writers/skit green light'ers over the years +Lorne. Even so, Kenan has still provided many a comedic gem over a very, very long SNL career.
But heck, the dude probably can't imagine ever leaving SNL voluntarily - involuntarily, he'll become much like the lurker ghost haunting the gloried halls of Studio 8H - I mean, it is literally the *only* thing he's ever really done in his whole entire life: Some 19-20 years out of 38 on this here rock. Sketch comedic acting... ain't exactly a whole lot of options otherwise, yeah? And from SNL, there ain't really anywhere to travel but down.

Another great episode. The camping bit and the Stranger Things sketch being my favorites.
This was my first time hearing Twentyone Pilots. Awful. It sounded like that "Rude" song but douchier.
