Lot of movies are based off from a book, anyway.

Music rights can be lucrative. I've read Altman's son, just on the song royalties, has earned more money from MASH than anybody else connected with movie, tv show or book.

Paul Anka wrote the theme to The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and has earned more from the show than Carson ever did.

And I believe Roddenberry made a ton of money just by tacking on terrible lyrics to the Star Trek theme so he could get a co-writing credit.

Beyond
The rim of the star-light
My love
Is wand'ring in star-flight
I know
He'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love,
Strange love a star woman teaches.
I know
His journey ends never
His star trek
Will go on forever.
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me.

And here is the theme with lyrics performed by Tenacious D.

No mention of the M*A*S*H spinoff that was actually successful?

I have enjoyed Jackpot's reemergence from relative obscurity in recent years.

Trapper John MD was a second spin-off series from the original movie and not the tv series. From what I recall it was mostly for legal reasons, though.

The TV show is clearly based on the movie, which was of course a big hit.
