Actress Patty Duke dead at 69

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/...ry?id=38004939

Patty Duke died this morning, ABC News has confirmed.

According to her rep, Mitchell Stubbs, the cause of death was sepsis from a ruptured intestine.

The actress, whose real name was Anna Pearce, was 69.

"She was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a friend, a mental health advocate and a cultural icon," Stubbs added in a statement. "She will be greatly missed."

Here's her IMDB profile for those unfamiliar with her. Long-time veteran TV actress. Was married to John Astin from The Addams Family.

She's the mother of Sean Astin.

I'll lose control with a hot dog tonight in her memory.

In terms of her mental health advocacy (before it was relatively mainstream) she's a hero in my book.

Very sad to hear this. I read her autobiography a few years ago... she had a pretty rocky childhood and struggled with bipolar disorder, but seemed to have managed it well and created a pretty stable life for herself. An admirable woman and a fine actress.

Despite Patty's mixed feelings about the movie, I really enjoy her role in Valley of the Dolls. A true camp classic:

I urge anyone who has not seen it, to go and watch The Miracle Worker. Two of the greatest performances in film history.

Ugh, I've seen people hospitalized from a ruptured intestine, not a way I'd hope to go. Well that and 69 is too young, and an oddly popular age this year.

It probably doesn't need to be said, but I assume you mean the 1962 version with Patty as Helen Keller, not the 1979 version with her as Anne Sullivan. The '79 version was good, but the '62 version was brilliant.

Yes, the 62 version is what I meant, thanks

Wow, I knew her mostly from watching The Patty Duke Show in Nick at Nite when I was growing up, surprised I had no idea about these two facts. RIP
