Posturing by Fox since they will have to negotiate salaries for both Duchovny and Anderson. They definitely want it back.

How many episodes get produced next season will almost certainly depend on how much those two demand.

If it does come back, it's definitely not going to be filler during Gotham's midseason hiatus. FOX is already producing a Prison Break event series, which seems to be the prime candidate for that. I think Gotham and Lucifer will be FOX's Monday lineup and Prison Break will be the fill-in show.

If X-Files comes back, it probably won't be until Spring 2017.

I'd say this season is a success. The wildly differing reactions to the episodes mean there is a fanbase for the show to continue. I loved the over the top episodes, Babylon and the Were-Monsters, and was meh on the rest. Others disagree. Good for the show.

Somewhat surprised to see the wildly differing opinions here. I thought this episode was fantastic; this and episode 3's greatness make the season worthwhile even if the finale tonight is a clunker like the other three episodes.
