You, Me and the Apocalypse (NBC) - Series Thread - S: Fischer, Mullally, Lowe

NBC has set the premiere for its new series "You, Me and the Apocalypse" with the critically applauded U.K. dramedy import debuting Thursday, Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. "You, Me and the Apocalypse" is a bold adrenaline-fueled hourlong comedic drama about the last days of mankind. When the news is announced that a comet is on an unavoidable collision course with Earth, the most hilarious and unexpected chain of events imaginable is set in motion. Against a backdrop of apocalyptic chaos, an eclectic group of seemingly unconnected characters around the world begin to intersect in the most unexpected ways, resulting in a nonstop mix of action, romance and wit. The story follows an unusual assortment of mismatched characters, each coping with the impending end of the world in his or her own bizarre way. Perhaps the most complex is Father Jude (Rob Lowe, "Parks and Recreation"), a rebellious and foul-mouthed priest who is tasked with being the "devil's advocate" with the aid of his new timid assistant, Sister Celine Leonti (Gaia Scodellaro, "Cugino e Cugino"). Rhonda (Jenna Fischer, "The Office"), a mild-mannered librarian, finds herself dangerously out of her depth when she is sent to a maximum security prison for a crime she did not commit. She unwillingly befriends Leanne (Megan Mullally, "Will & Grace"), an unhinged white supremacist who takes a deeply reluctant Rhonda under her wing. Morally dubious, but intensely loyal, Leanne is a woman uniquely suited to surviving the end times and will prove herself to be exactly the sidekick Rhonda needs. Then there is Jamie (Mathew Baynton "Yonderland"), the humble bank manager from Slough who is hopelessly stuck in a rut and still in mourning over the mysterious disappearance of his wife seven years ago. Spurred into action as a result of the impending apocalypse, he embarks on a perilous quest to find his loved one. There are 34 days until the comet collides with Earth and some of these misfits are destined to make it to a bunker deep beneath the English suburbs of Slough. As a result, they will become the incredibly unlikely, and totally unsuitable, future of mankind. Wouldn't that be a disaster! The cast also includes Joel Fry, Paterson Joseph, Pauline Quirke and Kyle Stoller.

The promos they have been showing looked good, but the face of that guy on the front row just above the word "Thursdays" in the picture portends suckage.

It's a fantastic show. It has a few bumps, but they mostly pay off if you wait them out.

I'm in. Didn't love it, but it held my interest. I'm usually not a fan of the the start-at-the-end-then-flashback-to-how-we-got-here format, but I can forgive it. Is this a limited-run, one-off show or is there the possibility of a second apocalypse next year? :-)

I wasn't sure about Rob Lowe as the priest, but IMO they setup that character perfectly for him. I'm also glad Jenna Fischer's character
Spoiler:
didn't spend much time in prison. That was too Orange Is The New Black-ish for me.

Crap, forgot to record it. I'm assuming NBC shows are available online/via app?

Good series. It started off a bit slow for me, but 3 or 4 episodes in I thought it really started to be worth the effort.

I'm not sure if it got picked up for season 2, but they did set up the season finale for another season.

Isn't Lowe still on The Grinder on Fox? Both networks don't mind he is on the other?

He did this show for the UK and it was filmed months before he started working on The Grinder.

This had really nice production values, sort of noticed that trend lately with UK productions.

I'd love a show about Lowe's devil's advocate character if Grinder gets canned.

I liked it. Early favorite characters are the priest and Mullally's character. I loved the bad priest's interactions with the nun.

I would never have sampled this series based on the NBC promos. However, I read some comments here and there, -it was a UK production, somewhat more serious than it was portrayed, -and decided to sample it. I was intrigued enough to stick with it. It certainly is an odd fit for an NBC 7pm slot.

It seems like a little too much to censor for broadcast at any time.

I think you have to enjoy the very British sense of humor to enjoy this show. I don't, which is why I likely won't continue with it.

Oddly its the plot more than the humor that keeps it humming

What a weird post. So if you don't enjoy the sense of humor you won't enjoy the show? You don't say.

Never heard of this until I was flipping through channels and saw it was on. Guide said original air date was in Aug/Sept, which I found odd since I probably would have heard about. Since I didn't hear about it, I figured it wasn't worth watching. Guess it was probably based on the original BBC airfare.

I'm probably the only person watching this. It wasn't renewed by Sky TV. I'll still finish watching the remaining episodes on NBC.

This. I hate almost all British shows, comedies in particular, but I'm a sucker for apocalyptic shows.

Me too. It's not really very funny at all. It is definitely more the plot than anything else that keeps it going. I expected laughs with Jenna Fisher and Rob Lowe, and there are some, but I would not classify this show as a comedy.
