"Seinfeld plot tricks advice columnist "Ask Amy"

full story:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...seinfeld-plot/

the letters:
Dear Amy: I recently ran into a famous local sports figure at my gym.

I didn't want to bother him, but much to my surprise he approached me. Turns out he knew me from my profession. He asked if I wanted to go out for coffee, and we exchanged numbers. A few days later we had coffee, and I thought it was pretty cool that he considered us friends.

Then everything changed. He told me he was interested in taking out a woman we ran into. She is my ex-girlfriend and we've remained good friends. He asked me a couple of times if I wouldn't mind if he asked her out. I reluctantly said no. I made plans with him, and then after talking to my ex I found out that he ditched our plans to go out with her.

The next day he called me and asked if I could help him move some furniture. I barely know the guy, next thing he will be asking me to drive him to the airport. Two friends of mine warned me not to trust this guy. What's the deal - am I being too rash or should I dump the guy as a friend?

- Feeling Foolish
Dear Foolish: The good news here is that you won't have to dump the guy as a friend because he is not a friend. He's an opportunist who just keeps asking you for stuff. I suspect that when you turn down his generous offer to let you move furniture for him, you'll likely never hear from him again.

Sounds like a false flag operation to get people to read newspapers again.

Considering Seinfeld ended over 20 years ago, I wouldn't expect everyone to remember all the episodes or to have even seen them. Could probably pull a Friends or Mad About You plot on someone and they wouldn't know.

The individual episode plots from Friends or Mad About You are not even in the same realm of public consciousness as Seinfeld.

Re: "Seinfeld plot tricks advice columnist "Ask Amy"

Not the first time it's happened to this particular advice columnist.

Dear Amy: I have a serious problem with my future wife. She has not been faithful to me.

I recently overheard her talking to her friend about how she was unfaithful to me. When I confronted her, all that she said was that she couldn’t talk right now. I feel like I have to record everything in my own house just to learn the truth.

To make things even more stressful is the fact that she recently told a couple of people that I hit her, but it’s not true. I did not hit her. I’m not sure why she has been acting like this lately. She did just find out that her mother has breast cancer, and that might be playing a role in her behavior.

We still always find time to make love, so I don’t know why she would go out seeking it from someone else. I just can’t believe she would do this to me. I love her so much, she is my everything, and I don’t know that I could go on without her. She is tearing me apart.

Seinfeld ended in 1998, a few years less than 20 years ago.

[Larry David]Having said that[/Larry David], I'm a Seinfeld fan and the storyline from that episode didn't immediately jump out to me. It has been a few years since I gave the show a watch, though.

Doesn't matter when Seinfeld ended, the episodes are constantly on in syndication.

Believe it or not, but the vast majority of people either never watched the show, only watched it occasionally, or haven't watched it since it aired.

I can't believe that. The kinds of money this show has made in syndication and sale to Hulu suggests the exact opposite - that many people watch it over and over.

You're kidding right? In its heyday less than 10% of the population watched it. And that's when it was #1. Not everyone even watches TV you know, right? Let alone sitcoms.

Yes, it's one of the greatest shows in history, I loved it, and I remember that episode. But to expect more than a negligible percentage of the population to do so is beyond ridiculous.

No particular form of entertainment will ever reach the vast majority of people, let alone the vast majority of Americans. Even something as popular as the Super Bowl is only watched by about a third of Americans.

Re: "Seinfeld plot tricks advice columnist "Ask Amy"

i'd bet the majority of those who'd still tune in to seinfeld are in their 40s/50s.

Those in their 30s will stop on occasion while they're flipping channels and catch a segment or two until commercial.

Those in their 20s will stop during a segment, wonder why those above found it funny, and move on.

Younger than 20s will just shrug and move on.

Re: "Seinfeld plot tricks advice columnist "Ask Amy"

I think there are only a handful of Seinfeld plots that are really well known across pop culture. The OP sounded like Keith Hernandez to me, but I wasn't sure, and I was a pretty big fan back in the day.

Catchphrases, on the other hand....
