So glad to see those big ratings, and I'm really looking forward to next week's episode.

It's my understanding that they wanted 12 THIS time, but Duchovny and Anderson didn't want to commit to that many (or couldn't work it into their schedules). Maybe they'll change their minds, but I know Carter wants a series and Fox wants a series...I bet you we see it come back for a 16-episode run next January with Mulder and Scully in about half of them and old favorites in others (a Skinner-centric episode, a Lone Gunman episode, etc.).

If the ratings hold, I could see a 16-episode season split into two 8-episode halves like The Walking Dead. That would help accommodate the cast's schedule to do other projects.

Just watched episode two. Wow, that felt like an old fashioned episode, except for the sequences with William.

Also, next week's promo had a Kolchak, Night Stalker look-a-like. Cool.

Yep, I get it as life moved on but it disrupted the flow of an original X-File telling. The end was great. When brother and sister basically gave a big FU.

I read that Duchovny was open to doing 10-13, so maybe Anderson is the sticking point (and hell, she should be, they initially offered her HALF of what Duchovny was being paid.)

Great to have this show back!

I liked ep two as well, and love these ratings.

13 eps next year would be sweet

Anderson's still contractually obligated to the BBC series The Fall, which starts it's 3rd season soon and is supposed to have a 4th, so she's the one that might not have enough time.

Duchovny is also contracted to do the 2nd season of Aquarius for NBC. However, the season 1 ratings were terrible and it was moved to Saturdays. I don't think that series lasts beyond season 2. He could feasibly do another season of X-Files after Aquarius wraps. I assume Aquarius will start filming soon to make air this summer.

As for Anderson, I don't think The Fall is really a factor. The seasons are super short. FOX just needs to pay her on par with Duchovny and she'll make the time.

How would Anderson even know what they were paying Duchovny? Did they come to her and say "we're only gonna pay you half of what David's getting."?

Her agent probably found out.

That was my first thought too, because I immediately recognized her (I said out loud "Hey, it's her!"). But then I realized it was Delores Herbig from Dead Like Me!

Other than making time for The Fall, I can't see how Gillian Anderson would be the sticking point since she was lobbying fans to show support to get the show to come back in the first place.

With regards to Duchovny and Anderson seeming to not be very energetic or the like, I think they're playing it that way on purpose.

These are two people who have been through the ringer and they're also over 20 years older than when the series started. I could understand how they'd both feel weary at this point.

Agreed. They're back at the FBI after 14 years, Mulder hasn't been a recluse for nearly all that time, and Scully's been working at a hospital doing emotionally-draining work. It makes sense that they're not all smiles and running around like they were in 1993.

Like most everyone else, I thought this episode was a substantial improvement over the disappointing premier. However, despite a few interesting moments, there still seems to be a noticeable lack of tension in the goings on. It just feels like everyone's just going through the motions. And I'm still not buying Mulder and Scully's return to the FBI one bit, but I guess I'm just supposed to accept that they're back because they need to be in order for the show to go on. I'm still looking forward to the balance of the season, but I have yet to see anything that justifies the show coming back in my eyes.

I loved that they covered one of the issues never really resolved in prior seasons. William. It was also great to see this be another "monster" episode that also moved the larger story along. The humor also seemed to get back on track after what was a pretty humorless first episode. Even Scully looked better. Not back to normal (even Hannibal normal) just better.

Apparently Carter would be interested in reviving Millenium.

I watched the first episode which I had DV'rd on Sunday this afternoon - not realizing that the second episode was on the next day (Monday) - "doh!" - glad the second episode is up on Fox online.

I enjoyed the episode more than the first.

I'd like the series to continue, even if it's only for another six episodes.

I would be so there for the return of Frank Black. I hope the return of X-Files somehow convinces Fox to issue Millennium on Blu-ray.

Re: The X-Files (S10E02) -- "Founder's Mutation" -- 1/25/16

The X-Files’ current revival is only six episodes long, but something curious is going on with their schedule: they aren’t airing in the order they were filmed.

The revival stuck to one of its initial plans—starting and ending with mythology chapters—but the hours in-between were shuffled. What was filmed as Episode 2 is now running as Episode 4; what was filmed as Episode 4 is now airing as Episode 5; and what was filmed as Episode 5 aired as Episode 2. (Episode 3 is the only standalone episode to remain in its intended spot.

Though fans might be tempted to blame higher-ups for tinkering with the airing order, The X-Files creator Chris Carter says the shuffle was done to tell the best story possible. “Because we have a story arc that runs through the middle of the series…we were concerned that, coming right off a mythology episode [and] going right into a standalone episode, people would say, ‘What’s happened?’” he explains. “So, it actually worked out. It served Episode 2 better to replace it with 5. It created a better continuity.”

While the revival’s flow might change slightly with the reordering, “we’ve come and done what we’ve always done: we give you an amazing mix of episodes—we’ve given you thriller episodes, we’ve given you scary episodes, emotional episodes, comedy episodes,” Carter says.

Since Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully’s (Gillian Anderson) first days back on the X-Files are now airing as the final standalone of the revival, Carter acknowledges he had to cut out “a sliver” of the episode to make it fit, continuity-wise. “It’s not even a deleted scene,” he says. “It was lines of dialogue.”

But don’t expect the dialogue to make its way to earlier episodes: as of now, the plan is to keep the cut bits out of the show
