Can't agree with that. The stand out 2 part Mythology episodes, and the other classic one-off's, are as good as TV has ever been. I would put the X-Files top 10 against any other top 10 of another show. Especially anything within the same genre.

Was it consistently awesome? No, no it was not.

So to qualify as "consistently", how much of the total episode count has to be "awesome"? And what shows in the genre meet that criteria?

I don't think I'm alone if thinking the reason has the reason the X-Files has the following it does is because it meets that criteria for most people.

Well I'd say more than ten in a series that has 203 episodes.

The majority of episodes were fun but ho-hum. And the last two seasons were a train wreck. Annabeth Gish was about as convincing as a cardboard cutout of Annabeth Gish.

That is just not true, the X-Files was classic television for many for almost all of seasons Two through Four. A lot of great episodes were sprinkled in the other seasons outside the show's prime. It's what led to Fox turning it into a movie franchise. Very few shows have made the jump from television to movies and back.

Shazam probably thinks Lost was a great show.

I only threw out 10 to keep it simple. I think far more are awesome, or at least measure up to all other shows int he same genre. Personally I would only say a handful or episodes were absolute crap. There were even some good ones in the last couple seasons with Robert Patrick.

So again, to qualify as "consistently", how much of the total episode count has to be "awesome"? And what shows in the genre meet that criteria?

I like to judge shows on their entire body of work. So yeah that's great that you think there were three seasons' of classic TV, but it's countered by the utter dreck of the alien plotline (don't you think that the fact that CC is STILL retconning it lessen the value of virtually all of the alien mythology episodes?) and the awful, horrible seasons of 8-9 (and parts of 7).

Well let's see.

Let's rate every episode in seasons 8 and 9 as 3/10. I think I'm being generous here. So that's 41 episodes.

So hey, you provide me with 41 episodes that rank 7/10 or higher. Then we're at mediocre for the entire series.

Ratings were really good considering how late it aired for the East market.

13.5M viewers and 5.1 in the demos.

Probably would have been higher had FOX not padded out the post game show until 10:30pm ET. I bet many people changed the channel or went to bed.

Let's not. I'm not alone in enjoying many of those a great deal.

Very curious what shows you seem to think are so much better. As for the rankings, I don't have them all previously ranked ready to pull out of a hat.

Good thing is it can only get better. That first epsidoe was pretty bad all around. Hopefully the monster of the week episodes the next four weeks show a sharp improvement.

You would get to 41 before the end of Season 3. And that's if you're being extremely critical. I wouldn't rank any episode in season 2 lower than a 7/10

What season had the silly, done many times before, building tries to kill people episode? Going purely by memory, that is the only true dud I can remember in the first few seasons.

Actually I think the X-Files was the first to have the building tries to kill everyone episode. Everyone else ripped off from them. There are several episodes from the earlier seasons that as I rewatch them I notice have been redone in the last few years by other sci-fi shows/movies.

The "man/woman needs something from the human body of others so they kill them to take it" has been done a million times since the X-Files.

It was also on right after a huge football game with ZERO new programming on the other networks. I'm more interested to see how it fares tonight, going up some first-run shows (including Supergirl).

Yes, yes it most definitely was. When's the last time you've actually gone through the entirety of Season 3? I'm guessing it's been a long time.

That was Ghost in the Machine from Season one. There were other duds in season one but I think the worst episodes in seasons 2 and 3 were still pretty good television.

My memory is not good enough to remember specifically what it was, but I distinctly remember thinking that the X-Files story was a repeat of that other movie/show when I realized that is where they were going with it.

Thanks. I was pretty sure it was S1, but didn't want to agree about how solid S2 was if that one was in there. 3/10 would be very generous.

You obviously are none too familiar with the show. The most casual of fans, if you'd even call yourself one. Season 8 was terrific overall and a marked improvement on Season 7 save for a few clunkers (ie. Badlaa and Salvage). You'd have to be a full-fledged imbecile to rate episodes like Per Manum, Deadalive, Roadrunners or Via Negative a 3/10. Season 4's Home is the most infamous episode and a well-known fan favorite but imo 8's Roadrunners, written by Vince Gilligan, is just as creepy, unnerving and well put together. Even Season 9 had its share of worthy episodes such as John Doe and Daemonicus, though it is undoubtedly the weakest year of the show and limps towards an unsatisfying end.

Another thing - there's was a bit too much Hank Moody in Mulder. He hasn't quite shaken him off just yet.

Re: The X-Files (S10E01) -- Season Premiere -- "My Struggle" -- 1/24/16

As a huge X-Files nerd, I enjoyed the premier, despite it's very rusty start. I didn't have a problem with Scully like a lot of people did, but I definitely see Duchovny doing a Mulder with a bit Moody in there.

I think what hurt this premier the most was the length. It NEEDED a two hour premier. I still am not completely sure what I just watched and what's going on... but I'm definitely in for the remaining five!

Did they ever explain what Mulder has been doing since 2002? I know Scully went back to being a doctor but all I could think of was Hank Moody screwing chicks on Californication.

Speaking of which, it was very Hank Moody when Sveta (aka hot chick from The Americans aka the "key to everything") told Mulder they had met and he was like "I'd remember meeting you." Didn't Mulder used to be more kind of awkward around chicks?
