When no one else is there to tell you you're wrong, there's always family. Nobody puts the love in tough love quite like the Alvarez family. One Day at a Time, a new show from legendary producer Norman Lear, premieres exclusively on Netflix January 6.

Good grief, why? The show was horrible...typical disco era schlock TV when networks said f-you America we will tell you what you like and good luck trying to watch anything else in this three network, pre-VCR era.

Norman Lear is 93 years old. He's a dinosaur in the TV world. He hasn't produced a hit show since the 70's. I'm shocked that Netflix listened to this pitch.

The premise sounds like any other run-of-the-mill single-mom type of sitcom.
The only thing that makes it feel like a reboot is a building-manager being friends with the family, which is too small a thing to be pinning a reboot on.

I love some of the classic Norman Lear shows like All in the Family and The Jeffersons but never watched One Day at a Time. Last I heard of Lear doing something with television was back when he had collaborated with Trey Parker and Matt Stone on South Park for something.

I preferred ODAAT over Jeffersons. Then again maybe it was due to dreaming about having a 4 way with Bonnie and the girls.

I'm enjoying watching All in the Family and Archie Bunker's Place now on Family Net. I didn't watch much of Archie Bunker's Place when it was on. I'd even be interested in seeing Gloria, which I never heard of until lately.

I'm also watching the Andy Griffith show on Amazon. They bring back good memories and are better than a lot of current shows.

I watched ODAAT reruns as a kid. The show was hit or miss at times for me. This reboot doesn't sound too exciting.

Most surprising news to come from this thread is that Norman Lear is still alive.

I sort of forgot about Archie Bunker's Place as I tend to lump it in with All in the Family I guess. Not a bad show but not quite as classic mostly due to Archie being the only main cast member other than Stephanie (but she was only on during the last season of All in the Family). I've never seen Gloria whatsoever. Had no idea until checking the Wikipedia page that it ran a full season, I always thought it was just a pilot that didn't make it any further.

I watched ODAAT reruns as a kid too, but other than a vague recollection of the characters, I'm pretty much apathetic about it. It doesn't seem like a show with a high nostalgia factor to it (like Full House) to make it worthwhile to bring back like this. (I didn't even like Full House when it was on, yet I find the idea of Fuller House strangely compelling.)

I'd rather see his newer script, Guess Who Died, comedy set at a retirement home, turned into a Netflix show.

That said, it should be noted that this is a Cuban American reboot of the show and co-stars Rita Morena, who does not look 84.

You mean Archie was the only holdover cast member? That was my first time seeing Martin Balsam.

Re: One Day at a Time returning to TV on Netflix (reboot) -- Norman Lear producing

Hopefully this will encourage them to release more seasons of the original on DVD. All that's out so far is the first season. It was on for nine years.

For three years in a row, fall 1979 - spring 1982, the Sunday night CBS lineup remained the exact same: Archie Bunker's Place, One Day At a Time, Alice, the Jeffersons, and Trapper John M.D. I watched all 3 years, and I was 8 when those 3 years began. I can still remember Alex accidentally burning down Schneider's trailer when he and a friend snuck in, smoked a cigarette, dumped the ashtray in the garbage can, and left without knowing it was still lit. And Alex's father died in a car crash and got reincarnated as Arvin Sloane on Alias. And the guy who played Higgins on Magnum P.I. was Ann Romano's boss for a while.

Barbara Cooper is going to be a guy in the new show???

And I'm just as surprised as the others here to find out that Norman Lear is still alive.

He and Stephanie were the main characters to go over to Archie Bunker's Place. Edith was also in the first season (although not a regular character) but she was written off in the second season. There were some recurring characters from All in the Family who became more regular cast members on Archie Bunker's Place.

I vaguely remember Schneider and can't recall anything else about the show's concept, but I do very much associate it with that 'late 70s tv' aesthetic... like Three's Company, The Jeffersons, CHiPS, and Fantasy Island.

So, I only saw a few episode of One Day at a Time earlier this year. Did they switch casts a lot? Because from what I saw, many of the main characters were not the people who apparently started on the show.

Ah, the single mom is the chick from "Six Feet Under". She looks damn good.
This trailer reminds me of "Cristela".

IMDB lists a "Schneider" as a character but I didn't see anyone with a vest and toolbelt in that trailer.

I was about to say the same thing. Like others said, Schneider (and Valerie Bertinelli) was like the most memorable part of the old show and if he's there in the trailers it's not apparent to me. In fact I don't even see what similarities this has at all with the old series besides trying to draw people in on nostalgia (and then turning them off because it's so different).

Justina Machado (the lead actress) was just in the USA series Queen of the South this past summer. She was also in Devious Maids. I like her, but I'm really not sure about this. This looks like a pretty formulaic ABC/CBS-style 30 minute family comedy.

Primary characters are Ann Romano and her two daughters Julie & Barbara and the building superintendent Schneider.

First couple seasons had her divorce lawyer, David (Richard Masur) who had a crush on her, and a neighbor Ginnie. Both left early.

Mid seasons had her boss and co-workers, including John Hillerman (Higgins from Magnum PI).

Later seasons brought in the girls' boyfriends/husbands. Ann's work rival (Shelly Faberes from Donna Reed and Coach) became a friend/regular. Her mother (Nanette Fabray) became a regular and the son of her deceased boyfriend became a regular when Julie was written out and Barbara grew up (cousin Oliver syndrome).

Ahh okay. I saw some eps with the rival co-worker, the architect love interest/co-designer and Glenn Scarpelli. In one ep, he and the building supervisor were working on his homework assignment.
