Yea, but they were always small references except for the first sighting that started it off - which is easier to dismiss because we weren't quite sure about the characters frame of mind during his sighting... and he died shortly afterwards anyway. It plays a major factor in this episode and is witnessed by a bunch of characters - which makes it feel more out of place.

I love the show, but I'm not sure about the UFO stuff either. Sticking it in every show doesn't mean it fits or is necessary (to me). It's one thing with the more indirect allusions to it, but with this last episode it just seemed out of place. I wonder if they are going to tie it in somehow in the finale or just let it be?
Of course cutting off SOA just means you missed the Katey Segal montage at the end with slomo footage of Jax strutting... (I just can't let that show go)

There’s a couple things that felt right about it. One is that it plays very well into the conspiracy-minded 1979 era where it’s post-Watergate, you had Close Encounters and Star Wars. There was a Minnesota UFO encounter [in 1979] involving a state trooper. It was certainly in the air at the time. Alternately in the Coens’ The Man Who Wasn’t There they had a [running UFO thread]; certainly it was more ’50s inspired, but it was part of the cinematic language of their movie. So it felt like it worked for the time period and worked for the filmmakers, and is a way of saying “accept the mystery” — which is a staple of the Coen Bros. philosophy in their films. And I thought it was funny.

Love the show but hated the UFO. Just felt odd and off. Hints, references and allusions are fine, but a flying saucer coming in at just the right moment during the massacre was ridiculous.

Agreed. This feels like stuff he's involved in. He certainly had an impact on it with a series of influencial series and movies.
And I disagree with people saying the UFO was out of place. It was absolutely expected. They've been referencing it long enough, not I want to know why it was shining its lights on Lou and specific people.
And what happened to Lou's wife.

There's also the unreliable narrator element to the UFO portion of the story. Who lives to tell that story? Certainly, I don't think Lou will be really talking about it. Maybe it's what Hank thought he saw while he was lying in the doorway bleeding out. We have seen that he a little obsessed by them.

It would explain why there haven't been as many UFO sightings since the 1970's. The aliens were like "You guys are crazy" and left us alone.

The unreliable narrator theory doesn't seem to work in this case. All the characters see it from their preservative, and in the case of Peggy, actually make a great "it's just a flying saucer" comment about it while it was happening. But I'll buy it if we get something in the finale that makes that workable.

We'll see, no SAG nomination but those are due in by October 22nd, which isn't a hell of a lot of time from the season debut.

They recap this on EW Radio every week and one of the hosts always rips on the show. His main complaint seems to be that the episodes are too long.

I somewhat doubt they'll go and explain the UFO. It's just there. And honestly, it fits the era. Close encounters just came out the year prior and Star Wars was about - it really is what the public was sort of thinking of a difference between these sleek UFO's of the 50's to the really detailed and heavily lit flying saucers of the 70's.
And again, this is "based on a true story" in so much that it states it is, but that was actually a situation that had local sheriff's stunned because of a UFO...
