Wow, the renewal is a surprise. I lost interest early on and missed a lot of shows this season. I have several stacked up on the recorder waiting to be watched. I guess I'll have to actually watch them now.

This really has been a good season. Glad to hear about the renewal! I enjoy this quite a bit.

I watched the pilot for this series years ago and didn't care for it. A CBS procedural cop show with a thin veneer of Sherlock? Female Watson?? Pshaw. I'll take my Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, thank you very much. But a week or two ago I read an indepth review of the series that was very complimentary and I figured I'd give the show another shot, with fresh eyes, and attempting to view it as its own thing. I'm so glad that I did. I have really enjoyed this show! There are parts of Sherlock's portrayal by Miller that I enjoy more than Cumberbatch's (more heart, fleshed out addiction issues, sexuality). I FAR prefer Freeman's Watson, but Liu doesn't detract from Elementary. I even really liked what was done with Moriarty. John Noble as Sherlock's father was fantastic. In closing, Johnny Lee Miller makes for an excellent Sherlock Holmes.
This season was rock solid. I'll be looking forward to next season.

I didn't mind what they did with Moriarity until the character was basically removed from the show. We've now had one appearance by Moriarity in the past two and a half seasons.
I found season four, without much of the gimmicks of prior seasons, a refreshing return to form for Elementary. They simply gave up trying to hook Joan up with another man and kept the focus on Sherlock and her solving crimes. I thought Noble's role had been wasted for much of the season until this final arc, which sent him off nicely.
I've never liked Freeman very much, he's always been the weak link in my mind of the British Sherlock series. Jonny Lee Miller is a very good Sherlock, though they've pulled back on some of his Sherlock's more theatrical tics.

I was a bit disappointed in the finale mostly because of the poor quality of the Morland Holmes storyline this season. Sherlock talks a good game about his father, but time after time he turned out to be not nearly as evil he was billed, which made the whole thing a bit boring.

Not sure if I like the change to being more serialized with Morland rather than a case of the week with the PD. I think this show worked very well as a procedural.

I read that John Noble isn't returning as a regular next season (though the door is open for him to return), so I would think the show would be more of a procedural next season.

There was some stuff I ended up really enjoying (after binging on Hulu). I really liked Sherlock's girlfriend and wish they could have used her just a bit more (not TOO much, but give her a couple more episodes). However, the last 5-6 episodes became a bit predictable and I started calling things out way before it happened and it disappointed me that Sherlock didn't see it right away (like the big reveal). Miller is a really underrated actor and has done a fantastic job as Sherlock.

Agreed, they built up Sherlock's father as some kind of worldwide menace when he's nothing more than a businessman fixer for criminal types.
I hope they have put that arc to bed.
