Yea... not good. But this isn't a show that I want to go on for 10 years. Two (most likely) or three excellent seasons is good. Since the creator is starting work on the X-Men show, I don't see it going on.

What is the deal with the UFO stuff? A sighting in the first ep and a passage from War of the Worlds last night - paired with very UFO like movements up the side of the building. Curious to see where that goes.
The beauty shop owner's pretty interesting too. Seems to want into Dunst's pants a little bit. |

I don't think that is going anywhere. It's just a callout to the UFO sightings that were rampant in the late 70's. I don't think it will tie into the story by any means. They are just ribbing us.
What’s up with the UFO? For me it ties into the narrative that in the ’70s everything became like “black is white, the sky is the ground.” That’s the mindset. Obviously UFOs were huge in the ’70s. What do they say in “A Serious Man”? “Accept the mystery.” It’s not in there accidentally, let’s put it that way. We’ll see what it adds up to. The Coens used a UFO in “The Man Who Wasn’t There.” There was some permission I felt on some level that they had addressed that issue. The ’50s and the ’70s are sort of similar in that they’re both times of major paranoia in America. That seemed interesting to me. It also seems to play into the idea this is a “true story” in a very broad sense. When I first went in to FX to sell them on the idea that we should do this together, I said, “The first thing we have to figure out is what’s our Mike Yanagita?” (The high school classmate from Marge Gunderson’s past who she meets for a lunch date in the movie “Fargo.”) It’s like, “Why is this in the movie?” For me it’s in there because it’s one of those details where you’re like, “Why would they put it in unless it really happened?” They had to find a way to incorporate it into the story. The question for us was, “What are those moments for us?” There would be those moments where you might get a note like, “Do we need this scene?” That’s the fun of it. I don’t know how people are going to react to every element or every detail but nothing’s there as a gimmick for me. Everything’s there for a reason. |

The fact that a show like this isn't getting good ratings is a clear reflection of how fucking stupid people in the 18-49 have become. We are doomed. :eek:

When I saw the first ep, it also reminded me of Man Who Wasn't There and thought it was an homage. But on Monday, along with the vertical panning, there were lights reflecting off the building. And I suppose the 'WotW' narration could be a metaphor for the family business vs the new corporate business, or something similar, but that ending felt weightier. Loved this episode as well. Had to wait to the weekend to watch it with my daughter. I hope Live + 7 ratings count for something. Plus if this show goes on to clean up at the Emmys (which feels possible), FX might keep it around for prestige. Anyways, I thought it was great and I'm liking it more than the beginning of Season One (which annoyed me at the time me because it seemed like everyone on that show besides Malvo was acting like an idiot until they shifted the focus to Molly in the second half). I think Ted Danson is great in this -- he's pretty much great in everything, but his mixture of paternal caring and world-weary experience is a fascinating watch in this show. And yeah, Bokeem Woodbine's unspoken menace is fantastic. To compare his exchange with Danson in this episode to the traffic stop of Malvo by Gus in the Pilot -- here it felt like a real stand-off between worthy foes as opposed to a clear mismatch in Season One.
