South Park (Comedy Central) -- Season 19 Thread

In seasons past someone else usually started the SP threads but since that doesn't seem to be the case this season, I'll go ahead and start them.

I thought this episode was just ok but I'll give it another watch sometime this week.

I did lose it when Caitlin Jenner ran over the pedestrian and everyone kept clapping for her.

So we're doing the serialized thing again this year?

I thought all the Canadian stuff was funny, especially the learning the alphabet in Canadian bit.

This episode really likes to push buttons as it slams both Caitlyn Jenner and makes a brief aside against Cosby's (alleged) rape victims ("changing your mind 40 years later...".

The plan was to give you the "Hot Cosby" so our species could co-exist.

Ugh...still going after Jenner? Wish we would just stop talking about her.

I liked this more than the disjointed season opener, which was just a way to get current events stuffed into an episode. Actually, this ep had a lot of that too (Canadian Trump and the wall), but I just never get tired of Parker and Stone riffing on Canadians. The reveal of them in the bar at the beginning had me rolling. And also the kids facing East and playing Chuck Mangione. Didn't make a bit of sense, and was hiliarious.

No one seems to want to make a new thread, so let's just update this one.

Anyhoo, last night's episode was pretty bad. No real laughs. Not even sure what it was trying to say. Gentrification... Whole Foods... what?

I liked the first episode, loved the second and now I'm ready for this story line to end. Hopefully PC Principal doesn't stick around and Kenny burns the WholeFoods to the ground.

Those were my same thoughts. They took the Whole Foods thread nowhere. They've put out a couple of these humorless episodes in recent seasons.

I was also very disappointed in this episode. Never laugh at the Canadian stuff and just did not see the point of all the commercial filler stuff in this episode.

Apologies for that. I did say I would make the thread and didn't. Completely forgot and haven't even seen the episode yet.

Might as well make this a season long thread. There isn't a ton of activity from thread to thread anyway.

Mod: Please change the thread title to "South Park Season 19 Thread". Thank you.

I found the Soda Sopa commercials hilarious.

I dunno as someone who lives in a city where major gentrification is ongoing, the Soda Sopa stuff was spot on and a riot. Those ads are exactly how they try to appeal to the yuppie douchebags who want to "live in the city," but don't really want to live in the city.

This. It instantly reminded me of the ongoing schemes to revitalize downtown Las Vegas. Some of the restaurants are good, but you have deal with panhandlers and homeless when walking from the parking garage to get to them.

While totally socially relevant, that SoDaSoPa episode was the least funny thing they've done in years.

Kenny giving his sister the doll was oddly poignant for this show.

"Nononononononononono!! Nonononononononononono!! Sodosopa! Sodosopa!"

Other than that, I agree, kind of a flat episode. Accurate, but flat.

Yeah, but it didn't really go anywhere, and they really didn't do anything with it, spot on, but nothing really "funny". And why would it get abandoned for a Whole Foods? My experience has been that a Whole Foods comes in first then you get the gentrification of places like SodaSopa.

The only thing I've really liked so far this season is that they are actively preventing kyle from his lame ass speeches. This episode was a dud to me.

Re: South Park (Comedy Central) -- Season 19 Thread

There was just a documentary on HBO about this. San Francisco 2.0. Eye opening.

I live out in the suburbs, and quite like my Whole Foods and artisan [mostly chain] restaurants. So I'm not sure how to feel about the message. I think the difference is that I live in the new suburbs, which is like a blank slate. And what's happening in South Park (and San Francisco) is that the ingrained culture and inhabitants are being squeezed out as prices increase.
