I just think it was a mistake to introduce the murder in the pilot. Hell, Tony Soprano didn't murder anybody until "College" in Episode 5 and he's a mob enforcer. I think they should have given Canavale a bit of room for his character to breathe and contemplate rather than immediately have him commit, then cover up a murder (and survive a building collapse) in the freaking pilot.

I don't know what DVRs have inaccurate showtimes but my Tivo recorded it with no issue.
Episode 2 was definitely not as good without Scorsese directing. Nice VU flashback though.

I watched the pilot this weekend. I'd give it about a 5/10. Kind of like a compilation of Scorsese's Greatest Hits. Nothing really new. I'll check it out again, but it seems very shallow.

I have yet to watch the premiere, but the title bugs me. Too "in your face" and seems to be riding the recent resurgence of the format

I like this show. I hope it keeps up the production value. I know the music budget must be on the cheap side (Warner Bros./HBO) so each episode is basically a giant commercial for the Warner catalogue.

The scene with Andy Warhol and the flashback to when Rickie met Devon kind of dragged but the rest was ok.
Sad that most of the songs featured have been used in commercials.
Probably nobody recognizes Vinnie Delpino from Doogie Houser as the A&R head or the guy with the beard who told the Nasty Bits to do a Kinks song.

Not really crazy about this so far. I wouldn't have blamed Ray Romano if OD'd on the Valium what with that nagging wife. Good god.

I thought the second episode was an improvement over the pilot. More grounded and finding its footing. Also, I liked the opening title sequence. We didn't get that last week.

Leaving the kids behind in a diner was the most Betty Draper thing any TV character has ever done -- including Betty Draper.

I like the actual Rock & Roll stuff and Juno Temple's character (and I liked the classic "Scorsese explaining the inner workings" scene in the pilot about how the record companies skimmed and ripped off artists). But the rest of it, I couldn't care less about. That's a problem since that's by far the bulk of the show.
You guys keep forgetting Max Casella's greatest role : Daxter in the PS2 Jax & Daxter video game series!

I'll counter that : I think cocaine is the least interesting drug addiction dramatically. Everyone takes huge comical snorts then runs around like a cross between Jim Carrey in The Mask and late-period Pacino over-acting. It's probably my least favorite part of the show -- it's so predictable. Did anyone think that the classic B.B. King guitar was going to make it out of the Pilot in one piece?

Well, it can't be heroin, because they'd pass out. I see the coke acting as an upper. Unless it was speed or some shit.

Vinyl (S1E03) -- "Whispered Secrets" -- 2/28/16
At a record producers' banquet honoring Maury Gold (Paul Ben-Victor), Richie (Bobby Cannavale) is embarrassed when the emcee, rival record exec Jackie Jervis (Ken Marino), makes a joke about the failed German Polygram deal. Later, Maury and mob cohort Corrado Galasso (Armen Garo) pay a visit to American Century to probe a detective's recent inquiry, and Joe Corso (Bo Dietl) drops by to pitch Richie a demo by his banquet date, Nora (Bianca Madison).
As Richie cuts down his roster to free up money to sign and promote new artists, junior A&R rep Clark Morelle (Jack Quaid) courts Alice Cooper (Dustin Ingram) in an attempt to sign him to a solo deal. Trying to find purpose in the suburbs, Devon (Olivia Wilde) turns to an old friend in hopes of raising funds to renovate a Greenwich barn that could house a displaced Russian ballet company. Approaching Lester (Ato Essandoh) about releasing some of his old blues demos, Richie reopens old wounds instead. The revamped Nasty Bits fail to win over Richie, prompting Jamie (Juno Temple) to change up their set list.

Re: Vinyl (S1E03) -- "Whispered Secrets" -- 2/28/16
Man, this show has been the biggest disappointment of the year for me. 3 weeks in & I have now deleted my season pass. Maybe my expectations were just too high. I thought this would be a fun ride through the 70's music scene. But this thing is so dull, drab & un-interesting. And there is not a single likeable character in the whole show. Just a bunch of assholes yelling and cursing at each other. And every week somebody throws & breaks something during a tantrum.
After watching the preview for next week, I think I would rather do almost anything besides subject myself to another hour of this.

I dunno, I'm really enjoying this.
Someone on here said they predict the Nasty Bits will save the label. I think it will be the opposite. I think they'll somehow "miss" the punk explosion by focusing on the wrong band (big hint: there's a ton of real bands being represented, but the band of this show is fictional). This prediction was bolstered by this past episode, where the opening act for the Nasty Bits is "Jeff Starship" (aka Joey Ramone)

Thanks for the Jeff Starship tidbit...
Thats where I thought this might be heading, that would be great if we can get the Ramones in this thing.
I liked the Alice Cooper bit, well done.
The Mob stuff is not good, I really wish they had found another way to incite some drama than a murder, ugh what a drag.

The show IS a ride through the 70's music scene. Fuck, this whole episode centered around Alice Cooper, the advent of hip hop DJs and punk rock.
The one thing I'm not crazy about is Canavale. He annoys the fuck out of me.

The scenes with Devon (Olivia Wilde) drag but the rest of the show is ok.
Whoever played Alice Cooper got all of his mannerisms and his laugh right.
Channing Tatum wished he had half the talent of the guy who played Alice Cooper.
