Just cought this last night...
I thought I had decent knowledge of Rock and music history but I was confused on many of the band names and their significance. Also didn’t think the show flowed all that well, just seemed to drag on. I'll give it a few more episodes but overall I was underwhelmed.

What (real) bands were referenced other than New York Dolls (which was awesome), Slade, and Led Zeppelin?

Are there really so few Jewish actors in Hollywood that they had to cast Ray Romano of all people as a New York Jew?

How forward-thinking was that "Buck" Rogers character? He made a generalization that everyone in Connecticut had Lyme Disease two years before the first case ever reported was discovered there.

The Andrew Dice Clay scenes were some of the best of the pilot. Dice fucking killed it.

Watching Vinyl on HBO Latino and hearing Peter Grant swear was a treat.

I agree. I was bummed afterwards that his run is over so quickly.

I'm kind of tuned in tuned out with this first ep. I agree Clay killed it and Cannavale Ive always liked but lackluster imo.

I like that Wilde is playing a former Factory girl... and they got an actual Factory girl to talk to her at the party.

I also like that it's obvious the punk (proto-punk?) band is going to save the label. As someone who'd prefer The Clash over Zepplin any day, I was worried this show would be about hero-worshiping those "classic rock" dinosaurs.

Wow, I did not even know that was Dice. I was wondering who that was because the performance was so good. And I hated Dice & his 'comedy' routine back in the day.

I don't think they did themselves any favors by starting off with a 2 hour pilot. Too much, too soon.

And really, if you can't even secure rights to Zep music, why even have them featured in the episode? I get that it was to move the story, but featuring concert scenes with sound-alike music ruined any credibility this show was aiming for.

Dice was easily the best thing about the pilot.

Finally got around to watching this... first off, I'm a HUGE Scorsese fan, and early-70s rock is my favorite music. I thought this was fucking terrible. Maybe it's because I'm so familiar with that time/music/scene, maybe I'm too familiar with Scorsese, but it was one terrible cliche after another, completely tone-deaf, with boring characters and just plain dull all around (nice camera work though). I should so be in the bag for this show, so if I'm not the target audience, who is? So besides the acting and production-values (most of it, not all), I thought it was so bad, I'm shocked it aired. Yikes!

Is there any animosity between Zeppelin and the Stones? (Mick is a producer on the series.) All I can think of is that Keef said some nasty things about Zep once,
but he tends to shit on just about everyone.

With the way LZ was portrayed in the first episode, they might come off looking kind of bad. That might be the reason they turned them down. Or they wrote the fake Led Zeppelin that way because they turned them down...

Vinyl (S1E02) -- "Yesterday Once More" -- 2/21/16

With German Polygram executives in town to complete the deal for American Century, Richie (Bobby Cannavale) delivers a bombshell that shocks the prospective buyers, as well as his partners, Zak Yankovich (Ray Romano), ACR's head of promotions, and Skip Fontaine (J.C. MacKenzie), head of sales. When the dust settles, the Germans storm out of the ACR offices, leaving Richie to face the ire of Zak, Skip and company attorney Scott Levitt (P.J. Byrne).

In Greenwich, Devon (Olivia Wilde) ponders what to do about her husband, who broke his promise by going off the wagon, though her anger is tempered by memories of the man she fell in love with back in 1966, when she was a fixture in the downtown art/music scene and a muse to Andy Warhol.

Back at American Century, Richie gives the A&R team a mandate to land a cutting-edge act or lose their jobs. Jamie (Juno Temple), pushing The Nasty Bits, is encouraged that Richie is interested in the band, but dismayed she'll be working with A&R head Julius "Julie" Silver (Max Casella), who vows to polish the Bits' sound. A devastated Zak considers changing his alibi for a recent injury, while Richie decides to pay a visit to an estranged mentor.

Written by Terence Winter; directed by Allen Coulter.

Saw it this morning and thought it was cool. Some of the scenes had a very dream-like feel to them, as if it was blurring the lines of reality but I figured it was just the coke.

Watched it the other day and thought it was decent. Was hoping for more truthfully. Wish I didn't think of the crypt keeper every time Olivia is on screen.

Dice managed to get his name back out there with Entourage and then he absolutely rocked his performance in Blue Jasmine.

Huh?

With Vinyl, Comic Book Men, Simpsons and Girls that is probably more shows on one night I watch the entire week.

Finally watched this today and thought it was just ok. Agree with those that say it felt too long, it could have been 90 minutes. Dice was great, wouldn't have known it him if I didn't read it here. The footage from upcoming episodes looked interesting so I'll give it a few more. It helps that it was renewed but I wonder if this will be another two season HBO show.

Re: Vinyl (S1E02) -- "Yesterday Once More" -- 2/21/16

FYI
If you're trying to DVR tonight's episode of Vinyl, chances are your DVR didn't record it. It didn't with mine. The air date on the episode is wrong. It's listed that it aired last week.

Next week's episode (episode 3) is listed with tonight as it's air date.

With HBO Go and HBO Now along with On demand, this isn't really a big deal.

Enjoyed this more than the Pilot. Could simply be because of the shorter length and not quite as in-your-face direction (and no voiceovers). Cannavale is good.

I believe that Suicide was mentioned as well (hopefully they will turn up on the show too).

I liked the pilot but didn't love it. I'll continue to watch as I have an interest in what was going on in the NYC music scene during that era. It was a real treat to see this show open with a New York Dolls performance.

They should have cast a much bigger guy to play Peter Grant. The real Grant was this huge, intimidating monster.
