Re: Tyrant (S2E05) -- "A Viper in the Palace" -- 7/14/15
Jamal is the only thing I like about the show. I thought the entire Bassam subplot was incredibly stupid. Everything from stealing the truck to changing his mind about leaving the country.

I've already forgotten, but she was the wife of the #2 or #3 guy in the Caliphate, right? It would be like DC cops having a DUI checkpoint and a car rolling up with Joe Biden or John Boehner's wife in the back and a driver up front. DC cops probably know her by sight, and she's important enough to let through without a lot of questions.

Re: Tyrant (S2E07) -- "The Awful Grace of God" -- 7/28/15
I really enjoyed this episode, mostly because it showed that even though people may be on opposite sides of issues or situations, there's often very little separating them. The writers did a good job of showing two people who care about each other as people, but who have different goals -- goals which they've at least partially been forced into. And the price for deviating can be your life and the lives of those you care about.
It's difficult to even define a "right" side on this show. Jamal had some humanity left, but he's also a product of growing up not only in the country, but in the royal family. His uncle put him in a terrible position by gassing. It increasingly seems the only valid way out for him would have been to do a public execution of his Uncle and explain why. But it would have needed to be a REALLY good explanation to avoid when his Uncle pointed out -- that killing him because of the gassing incident would say to his people and the world that he can't control his own house. Still, it's the step I would have devoted a lot of energy to trying to take. The alternative of letting everyone think the gassing was endorsed by his regime is costing him all kinds of moral high ground. |

Really? I think this show has hit rock bottom. The whole inheritance storyline is horrible. Bassam becoming a freedom fighter is probably the most unbelievable part of the show. When Sam said he wanted to meet with the insurgency before he gives the money, I nearly fell out of my seat. If that's the way he's going to be reunited with his father, I'm going to laugh my ass off. The show has become a horrible caricature of what is going on in the Middle East. The only thing keeping me from dumping the show is Jamal. He seems to be severely underused this season.

Re: Tyrant (S2E07) -- "The Awful Grace of God" -- 7/28/15
Well, let's put it this way, it completely went off the rails and into a dead end towards the end of last season, this season some how managed to pull itself out of a nose dive.

Re: Tyrant (S2E07) -- "The Awful Grace of God" -- 7/28/15
Like I said many times - last year was much more off the rails since they never addressed the religion side of things. That alone makes this season much better.

Re: Tyrant (S2E08) -- "Fathers and Sons" -- 8/4/15
I mean, it's better than last season. I'll give it that. But that episode was a whole lot of happy coincidences.

Re: Tyrant (S2E08) -- "Fathers and Sons" -- 8/4/15
Sometimes, the only explanation we get of a character's motivations is when a character explains himself to another character. The reason for Bassam not calling his family felt all kinds of weak. At this point, setting the country on the right track seems to be the only guiding force in his life. His family doesn't even rank. They should just forget him and move on. What father/husband does that? That aspect just doesn't ring true. They haven't given us enough justification.

Re: Tyrant (S2E08) -- "Fathers and Sons" -- 8/4/15
I guess I am somewhat in the minority as I think the season has been terrific. I actually get Basam moving on and not calling his wife, it seemed like an organic and believable decision, as he was originally planning on calling her after he was truly safe. I look forward to this every week.

Re: Tyrant (S2E08) -- "Fathers and Sons" -- 8/4/15
I'm basically of the opinion that this season has been better than last season. I wasn't sure if I would stick with this show. I'm still not entirely sure. It's doing just enough to keep me from dropping it.

Re: Tyrant (S2E08) -- "Fathers and Sons" -- 8/4/15
As a recent convert to the show, this season is way above season one. I agree with johnnysd that it did feel organic in why Bassam is doing what he is doing. Sure a grander reason would be more entertaining but at least this makes sense.
That being said, what could the show do for a third season? |
Re: Tyrant (S2E08) -- "Fathers and Sons" -- 8/4/15
actual real elections between Jamal and the hero of the rebels that the media seems to be hyping the fuck up.

re: Tyrant (FX) -- Season 2 Thread -- premieres 6/16/15
Wow what a way to end the season. The episode itself was really ho hum until that final minute. Not really crazy about the way it ended as I think it loses one of it's best characters for the show. Any word on if this is even coming back for a third season?

re: Tyrant (FX) -- Season 2 Thread -- premieres 6/16/15
I enjoy this show more than I thought I would. Maybe it's just nice watching something set in a world I only ever see on the news.
I will say this though, I have never really been into middle eastern women, but the sheer number of stunningly beautiful ones on this show has changed my opinion somewhat. |

Speaking of which, I liked how Barry answered his son's question about the connection to that woman. He's not going to tell his son he's in love with another woman, but rather than take the easy way out ("She's just a friend"), he respected what they have between them and did the best he could to explain her importance to him without making it inappropriate. It's "adult" moments like that in this show that make it enjoyable for me. I've heard people say man times Jamal is their favorite character, so I was curious to see what reactions would be. Sometimes he just comes across as a caricature to me, so I'm not as impacted. In fact, I wasn't sure if he'd really die or just be severely injured. Whatever the case, I'm still looking forward to next season. |
