Proof (TNT) - Series Thread - S: Jennifer Beals, Matthew Modine

For millennia, the world's greatest scholars and philosophers have tried to answer one important question: Is death truly the end, or is there something else beyond? Now a brilliant surgeon is ready to take up the mantle in TNT's intriguing new drama Proof, starring Jennifer Beals (The L Word, Flashdance), Matthew Modine (And the Band Played On, Full Metal Jacket), David Sutcliffe (Private Practice, Gilmore Girls) and Joe Morton (Scandal, Terminator 2: Judgment Day). Beals plays Dr. Carolyn Tyler, who has suffered the recent, devastating loss of her teenage son, the breakup of her marriage and a growing estrangement from her daughter. Carolyn is persuaded by Ivan Turing (Modine), a cancer-stricken tech inventor and billionaire to investigate cases of reincarnation, near-death experiences, hauntings and other phenomena, all of it in the search for evidence that death is not the end. It's both a journey of exploration toward finding an answer to a question many people have asked and a deeply personal and emotional journey for Carolyn, who hopes to find answers in the wake of her son's death. Proof also stars Callum Blue (Dead Like Me, Royal Pains), Edi Gathegi (X-Men: First Class, Justified) Annie Thurman (The Hunger Games) and newcomer Caroline Rose Kaplan. The series is produced by TNT, with Kyra Sedgwick (TNT's The Closer), Rob Bragin (Greek, Murphy Brown), Tom Jacobson (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Uncle Buck), Jill Littman and Emmy(R) winner Alex Graves (The West Wing, Game of Thrones) serving as executive producers.

I think they needed to show two back-to-back episodes or make the pilot 2-hours because there really wasn't enough here to get me hooked. I like the actors involved but even for a pilot there was backstory and a little bit of setup but then it just sort of ended. I'll give it a few more episodes.

It wasn't terrible, but I agree it didn't hook me. I do like Jennifer Beals.
I'm actually wondering what kind of "case of the week" they do with this to keep it going. Just go around and interview different people every week who came back from the dead? And then what? I am not sure how a procedural will work when nothing will actually get solved every week. But maybe they will take the series in a different direction.

I finally watched the 1st episode today. Yeah I agree with the previous 2 comments. It was okay. It didn't really grab me. The back story with the main characters, especially Beals was a little thin. Barely recognized Matthew Modine. He looked really old and thin.
Since this show is dealing with life after death, I'm taking it will have some supernatural/fantasy elements. But I don't know how the procedural elements will work. What exactly are they going to be able to accomplish in future hours of TV with their findings. Well, I guess I'll see in episode 2.
I will say this that Jennifer Beals is really beautiful and looks fantastic for 51. Glad she got work again after Chicago Code was cancelled. Not too many women her age can get lead roles.

After 2 eps it Seems too much of a ghost of the week show. Have one more to watch on the dvr so that might be it for me.

I'm still watching. although it is very much "background viewing" for me. Fine to have on while I fold clothes or whatever, but not appointment television.
I will say though that this most recent episode had a really riveting scene for Beals (where they revealed how her son died and her reaction to it.) That was really well done.

Finished the season today after watching the last 4 episodes.
Show was watchable, but I don't think it was ever great. I do like Jennifer Beals though and liked her on here.
I think the 10 episodes does work as a self contained season if the show doesn't come back. It left things a little ambiguous, but there was some closure. I think a second season would delve more into fantasy and science fiction because none of the theories about Life after death in this show are proven.
If you're sitting on multiple episodes/the entire season unwatched, I would probably say move on. With Fall TV starting next week, I don't think the show is memorable enough for a binge watch. If it comes back next summer, TNT will probably air a marathon anyways.

I don't why, but I ended up enjoying this show a lot more than I thought I would. It definitely got much better toward the end of the season.

Also, having not known, I would never have thought that Beals is half black, until the episode with her parents.

I enjoyed the show overall and I think the performances saved the mostly mediocre story lines. I'll watch it if it is renewed.
