Halt and Catch Fire (AMC) -- Season 2 Thread of catching all the fire

I figured this show probably just needs a catch-all thread, since the discussion last season was pretty... sparse. I only ended up binge-watching it a couple months ago (twice), but I LOVED it. I can't wait for Season 2 to begin this Sunday.

Season 2, Episode 1 synopsis:
Spoiler:
SETI
Cameron and Donna's gaming company, Mutiny, reaches a critical stage; Joe and Gordon are reunited.

Looking forward to season 2, I think this show will find its groove much quicker this year with the characters fleshed out a bit more.

I thought last season was hit or miss, but I found Lee Pace fascinating in this. I'm in for season 2.

The first season is on Netflix. Tried watching the pilot, but the whole "rebel/punk/emo but also a computer genius" chick was immediately insufferable.

I thought the same thing, that pilot did the show no favors playing up her punk rebel status. I actually gave up on the show because of the pilot.

It was extremely fortunate I was given the chance to see the entire season on Blu-ray. Halt and Catch Fire is superbly executed drama with engaging characters, particularly Lee Pace's quicksilver Joe doing a loose impersonation of Steve Jobs. It's far better written and acted than AMC's more popular shows.

I am surprised AMC let it go to air with a name like Halt and Catch Fire. The archaic computer term is so obscure by today's standards that it hurts the show's recognition.

Personally, I thought Kerry Bishe was the real standout in the cast. I'm curious to see what they do with her and Cameron this year.

Yes, I thought the other female character was much more interesting than the Mary Stuart Masterson lookalike.

I binged this a couple months ago also. Lee Pace creeps me out for some reason. Not just on this show but his elf character did too.

That may have been the only thing that got it renewed for a season two, its sheer quality. The ratings for season one weren't particularly good and a different network might have canceled it. Though most cable nets give most new shows two seasons these days to find an audience.

Didn't even know this show came out last summer, and that's when I still had DirecTV. The show wasn't promoted very well compared to other shows from AMC. I ended up seeing an episode after a Mad Men episode, and then saw it was on Netflix and binge watched one night the whole first season. I liked the cast from their other stuff, and thought it was a good first season. Looking forward to season 2.

Re: Halt and Catch Fire (AMC) -- Season 2 Thread of catching all the fire

I was on the fence during the first few episodes last year, but I really got into it during the 2nd half of the season. This isn't a show I HAVE to watch on Sunday (like Mad Men or Game of Thrones), as its a good DVR show that I catch up with during the week.

I'm still suprised they renewed it last year as I didn't know one person who watched it, or let alone heard of it.

I was a big fan of this show last summer. I too was on the fence the first few episodes, but it found it's groove and the rest was history. As mentioned, great cast and well executed. Excited for season 2 to begin.

I really liked the first season. I was happily surprised that it was picked up for a second season, can't wait!

So glad this show was renewed. I binge watched the first season (watched it once as it aired) on Netflix this week, and I thought the show started out slow but by the end was really picking up steam, can't wait to see where things go.

After the praise in this thread I saw the first episode last night and I'll be continuing.

Edit: aaaand I just finished the season. Did not expect to do that so quickly.

Re: Halt and Catch Fire (AMC) -- Season 2 Thread of catching all the fire

I was browsing on HBO, Showtime, AMC, etc websites a few days ago looking for something to watch and noticed this show. Never heard of it until a few days ago. The concept was interesting because I was into computers in that same era, so I just binge-watched Season 1.

I liked it. I can see others being bored by it because it's about technology before their time, but I enjoyed it for technical, nostalgic and basic story-telling reasons.

They did a nice job with the era and I have to believe they used Mad Men as a reference. Try to be as true to the era as possible. Most of the actors even had the right look for the era - in the same way that Don and Betty looked just right for Mad Men's era. Joe is 80's to the T.

The technical aspects were done really well. A few things weren't 100% accurate, and I think they mentioned future technologies a little early for 82/83 - but it's easy to forgive.

I think one aspect of the show that probably turns people away from giving it a try is the title of it. "Halt and Catch Fire" fits the show in every regard, but it's a lot tougher to market the show with that name.

Donna is hot.

I look forward to Season 2, but am kind of annoyed that now I'll have to watch it week-to-week.

Caught this on Netflix a few weeks ago.

Lee Pace is excellent. Loved the 'business drama'. I hope the show holds up. I have no idea what to expect.

I thought the first season would hold more interest for someone that was familiar with that specific era's PC technology. I wonder how someone that never grew up with a floppy drive or understood the tech would enjoy it.

Wonder if they're depicting a company like Sierra On-Line during the early-mid 1980s.

They've practically rebooted the series in season two except keeping the main characters around. I found the premiere a little disjointed.
