Renewed for an 8th season. However, last reports say that Stana Katic has yet to sign for next season.
ABC hired Terence Paul Winter (not the Boardwalk Empire guy. He's a staff writer) and Alexi Hawley, the former showrunner of The Following, as co-showrunners next season.

I know it has been renewed but man that had a very series finale feel.
It also looked like they setup Kate the Senator = writing her off the show and Kate the Captain = Stana Katic signed on for more.

Definitely written as a series finale in case it didn't get picked up. Pretty fun episode; I'm glad they didn't linger on who it was once Wallace Langham was introduced. The show's getting a bit stale but I still enjoy it quite a bit. The cast has great chemistry together.

Great episode. Yeah, it was nice that once Castle said that it was the psychiatrist they didn't try to pull a twist and make it the surprise other guy as the killer. How Castle found him and dealt with him was perfectly played.
And, yes, when it was over the only think I could think was, "They really didn't expect to get picked up for another season." That was definitely written as a series finale, but left enough open that they've got new options for Season 8.
SO glad that Stana signed up for what will probably be the final season of Castle. I still love the show, even if it hasn't been truly great, consistently great since about season 4. It's still been very good and each season has had at least a handful of top level episodes (without any real bad ones, unlike Bones at the same time in that series' run).
I'm looking forward to Season 8 - and I hope they go with Captain Beckett (and I imagine that they will).

The way they ended that confrontation was much more satisfying anyway.

Oh sure, but sometimes I have issues with lapses of logic in order to set up something dramatic.

OK, after re-watching all of Season 7 I changed my mind - while it wasn't quite up to the standards of the previous seasons, I really, really enjoyed Season 7 and firmly believe that it holds up well against any of the previous seasons.
This episode was really good and I liked a lot of choices that they made with it.
Now I've got to see how Season 8 holds up. It's been years since I watched either season, so that will be interesting. My memory is that it was a hit or miss season, with some really good episodes, and some really mediocre (at best) episodes. And if I remember right the finale was a hot mess.
