Marvel developing Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff for ABC

Huge news for Agents of SHIELD fans. Not only is a third season of the action-adventure series pretty much guaranteed, but Marvel is quietly developing a spinoff for ABC.

We’re told a spinoff is being developed by SHIELD executive producer Jeffrey Bell (Angel, The X-Files) and SHIELD writer Paul Zbyszewski (Lost, Hawaii Five-0).

We don’t know is which characters from the current series will be moving over to the proposed spinoff – so let the speculation being on that. There won’t be an implanted pilot episode this season directly setting up the spinoff, either (like how CW launched The Flash out of Arrow). However, story elements that are still to come on SHIELD this year will be used to lay the groundwork for the potential new series. So by the end of the season – assuming the details for this project haven’t already leaked, which is rather unlikely – the spinoff concept should be clear.

Under the best-case scenario, the spinoff would hit ABC as soon as this fall. But there are other timing possibilities too, including midseason. Of course, the spinoff also might not even happen. Not only is SHIELD not yet officially renewed, but ABC has yet to select which of its crop of pilots will receive series orders – decisions that could impact the SHIELD spinoff plan.

SHIELD currently averages 7.4 million viewers and a 2.8 rating among adults 18-49, when including seven days of DVR playback. If greenlit, the spinoff would expand Marvel’s TV empire yet again. On ABC there’s SHIELD and Agent Carter (that latter, we’re told, has about a roughly 60 percent chance of returning for a second season). Plus the studio has its multi-title Netflix slate in the pipeline which launches tomorrow with Daredevil. ABC does not comment on current development, and Marvel had no comment.

I'm a little surprised they would want to do a spinoff, since the show's audience has tailed off. I love it, but even now the show can be a little uneven so i'd rather see other shows concerning heroes, not more SHIELD.

Agents of SHIELD is a mediocre show. What are it's ratings? Is even worth having on? I keep watching it in hopes of something honestly solid.

I haven't started watching season 2 yet, but I thought it was good? Season 1 was good after the post-Winter Soldier storyarc kicked in. To quote Snake... Bill fucking Paxton, man! Bill fucking Paxton!

I stopped watching the show after the last hiatus. I don't miss it, but I do miss Adrianne Palicki. If she got her own show as Mockingbird, I'd tune in to that.

I think the show is pretty good. Most of us in the discussion threads seem to still enjoy it quite a bit.

Agent Carter was mediocre and AoS has been mediocre since it came back from it's hiatus. I can't imagine that more SHIELD will be a good thing.

I've really grown to like the show. The start was pretty rocky, but I think it's leveled off to being a pretty good/great show. The one thing I do like about the spin-off idea is the show-runner. That's a big leap up from the pair running the main show.

I can't honestly see them doing anything other than an Inhumans oriented spinoff at this point. That way it would tie in with the movies. This season has been pretty mediocre so far.

Yup. If we are leading to an Inhumans movie in 2018 (IIRC), this seems to be the logical bridge to bring many of them to the screen.

Marvel needs to not push things

Remember when Disco ruled the world like Superhero tv shows/movies do now ? and they a huge backlash literally killed Disco over the weekend

I hope this doesn't happen to Superhero shows

There are already too many

People always use this argument about too many superhero shows (or movies) but they conveniently forget that there are ten billion lawyer and cop shows with no end in sight. People demand it, and the companies supply it. It's simple economics.

Comparing it to disco is a bad comparison because music has always been a generational thing. Every generation has different music trends. I don't listen to the same music my dad listened to, and he in turn didn't listen to the same music his dad listened to.

Season two has been an absolute disaster for SHIELD, its link to Marvel is the only thing keeping it on the air. I would guess they will give Mockingbird her own show, ABC wants female-driven shows.

If Marvel wasn't intensely interested in growing their brand among women, I doubt SHIELD would last much longer.

I hate AoS and finally quit it but Agent Carter was great. 8.4 on imdb, 73% on Metacritic. I'd watch a show with her about the nascent days of SHIELD and probably no other show having anything to do with SHIELD.

Hardly a disaster. That said, Mockingbird getting her own show makes a lot of sense.

Given how the rating for the show have apparently been pretty disappointing, I'm kind of surprised that they're considering this.

Agent Carter was so great mostly because of Haley Atwell and also it was a period piece. I doubt the spinoff will have a big name lead or be in any period but the present.

The superhero movie craze will burn out the same way everything else does. It all passes. Marvel want to milk it dry while they can.
