The Vampire Diaries (S6E17) -- "A Bird in a Gilded Cage" -- 3/19/15

"A Bird in a Gilded Cage" - (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (Content Rating TBD) (HDTV)

DAMON TRAVELS TO THE 1903 PRISON WORLD -- With the help of Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Kai (guest star Chris Wood), Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) set forth a plan to rescue Damon's mother Lily (guest star Annie Wersching), who is trapped in the 1903 prison world. Meanwhile, when Caroline's (Candice Accola) plan for Stefan (Paul Wesley) backfires, she is left to pick up the pieces. Elsewhere, back at Whitmore College, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) and Alaric's (Matt Davis) attempt to reel Caroline back in doesn't quite go as planned when they realize they're outmaneuvered. Lastly, an unexpected gift from Bonnie leaves Damon shaken to his core. Joshua Butler directed the episode written by Neil Reynolds (#617). Original airdate 3/19/2015.

Two solid episodes in a row. That might be a first for this season. I think they might have finally found a decent storyline for Enzo with Sara.

I agree I think they've found some nice elements that work. It almost has a season 1/2 level of unpredictability.

Those vampires in the basement were super creepy. A bit reminiscent of everybody trapped in the church where Catherine used to be trapped.

I honestly feel vs for Kai. Sure he was an add and psychopath, but he's a much better character now. Bonnie on the other hand is still a bitch and I don't have any sympathy for.

Also, mother Salvator is off her rocker, but hiding it.

Damon didn't need to drink blood while in the prison world why did the other vampires?

Major News for those of us still watching.

Nina Dobrev (Elena) is leaving the show after this season.

Here's her statement:

Dearest TVD Family,

I've just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries. I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn't just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there's still so much more to come before the season finale in May. Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I'll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever.

There's more to come before we wrap this up, and I promise you'll get to hear all about my experiences over the next month as we approach the season finale (I have given an exclusive interview for the June issue of SELF Magazine that I am excited for you to see!), but until then I invite you to hop on the roller coaster ride that is Elena Gilbert's life and join me as I celebrate her and prepare to say goodbye to her -- and to my work family -- as I move on to the next chapter of my life. I want to share this goodbye with all of you (this weekend's pictures were just the beginning). You, the wonderful fandom who gave more love, support and passion than anyone could have ever imagined seven years ago, when a young Degrassi girl from Canada showed up in LA to audition for 'that Twilight TV show.' ;-) I love you all. Fasten your seatbelts. If you think you know what's coming, you don't.

Love, Nina

Well that sucks. The show has lost a lot over the years, but I'm willing to bet they didn't have enough to wrap things up. Honestly, she is the show (even though some of the characters are better these days), as everything started with her. Given this I'm fine with the entire show packing up this year.

It was renewed for a 7th season. Given these circumstances, season 7 is practically a lock to be the last.

That is fairly stunning news. The entire show revolves around her character, the writers almost certainly didn't have advance warning she wouldn't be coming back. It's going to make a mess of this season's endgame and permanently cripple the show going forward.

I would guess that the CW / Warner saw VD's declining ratings (they are pretty terrible by this point, TVD is no longer an anchor show) and lowballed her contract renewal offer. When she realized they weren't kidding, she decided to walk away. She would have been a hot property for films two or three years ago when this show was still considered the best thing on the CW.

Supposely everyone but Nina and Michael Trevino signed contracts for season seven back in August. (Trevino was recently cast in a ABC pilot called Kingmakers - they film him so he/Tyler Lockwood could return in the show - my guess they have to go off to a police academy.) So the episodes were written to have Elena be gone after this season. My guess she takes the cure and leaves to have a normal life - that will be the final scene this season.

I am tired of shows I watch for years having terrible finales. I hope it doesn't happen now with The Vampre Diaries.

Honestly, the show should've ended after season four. As long as season seven is the last I'm ok with this.

While I had grown bored of the Originals and Klaus on Vampire Diaries, the show had no suitable replacement for them in place. The show also poorly handled the transition from Stefan as male romantic lead for Elena to Damon. They should have immediately introduced another viable relationship for Stefan once it became clear Damon was the chosen one.
