Wow, that one scene sure was awful and felt a bit inappropriate in light of recent terrorist videos.

Agreed on both counts. Not that they should have cut the scene because of ISIS, but it was pretty horrific.
Otherwise I liked this very busy episode - especially having Nina reunited with her old station chief. That's a little uncomfortable.

I had forgotten all about Nina and Vasili until he popped up on screen last night.

I wonder how long this softening up of Elizabeth, letting the kid live and going to Gabriel about helping Philip's son, is going to last, though I can see her using that a distraction to for him while she works on Paige.

Keri Russell looked pretty good with that short blonde wig.

Really? Why? I think it's still a VERY strong show and pretty interesting.

I am still hanging in there but I kind of hate the Paige story line as Phillip would never in my view let Elizabeth do what she is doing. Plus, the show is SO subtle that the last few episodes have been frankly boring.

Yeah, I'm not dropping the show but this season just ain't doing it for me. We're now EIGHT episodes in and the Paige storyline is still draggggggging along. I did like the scene where Martha asked Clark, "Who are you???" Must've been what he'd been dreading most, though I can't believe she accepted his non-answer...

ha. yeah. I was still confused how Martha's questions were sort of glossed over... and they just go and have sex. Seems odd that she's not dead already.

Re: The Americans (S3E08) - "Divestment" - 3/18/15

I think it was pretty clear that Martha barely accepted Phillip/Clark's answer and the only reason she did at all was because he told her how much he loved her. The thing that made Martha the perfect mark for this plan was just how desperate she was to be loved and in love. It's the only reason someone in her position would actually be ok with that ridiculous marriage. I don't think Phillip killed her because I'm pretty sure he has genuine feelings for her and this whole season has been about his inability to put aside his feelings in the name of serving his country. At this point he's going to try and fix the situation without anyone getting hurt.

I just want to reiterate how great I think this season has been and while I get that different people like different things, I'm honestly shocked at the number of people in these threads thinking about dropping the show. For my money it's the best thing on tv right now and my only fear is that it gets canceled before it has a chance to finish up it's run in a satisfying manner.

Re: The Americans (S3E08) - "Divestment" - 3/18/15

I think the main plot has been moving along fairly slowly this season. I was bored at times during this episode, though I am not close to dropping the show. The Soviets working against South Africa B plot hasn't done much for me all season.

I wondered why Philip didn't come up with a clever lie to Martha? Something about the Soviets coercing him into planting the bug and that his mother's life was threatened.

Anyone wonder if Philip really has a son in Afghanistan?

I wondered that as well but it would weaken the storyline if it turned out to be a ruse. The Center wants Philip to understand that it can and will do what it wants with his children and if he doesn't go along with their plans then things can get a lot worse for them.

This didn't jibe with me either. At first he was ready to scorch the earth at the mention of making Paige a spy. Now hes like, shrugs, I dont like it but what are you gonna do.

But what can he do? If his goal is to shelter his daughter and keep the truth about what they really are from her, going all scorched earth won't help. In the spot he's in he's just got to hope Elizabeth and the center change their minds because nothing he does can stop the inevitable.

Re: The Americans (S3E08) - "Divestment" - 3/18/15

If he made it clear to Elizabeth and the center that he would stop being a spy period if they attempt to turn Paige. I think they would back off. They've mentioned before how valuable Philip and Elizabeth are to the center. If Philip was willing to ruin that the Center would have no choice but to back down and so would Elizabeth. Shes made it clear that she doesnt want to lose Philip, if he threatened to leave her again she'd get in line.

True, but it was historically accurate. I don't know that it ever used in the U.S. but the ANC did use "neckties" as a method of killing.

Sounds like it was portrayed a little differently in the episode. The tire wasn't really used to hold the gas but just to immobilize.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necklacing

Necklacing is the practice of summary execution and torture carried out by forcing a rubber tyre, filled with petrol, around a victim's chest and arms, and setting it on fire. The victim may take up to 20 minutes to die, suffering severe burns in the process.

(I am also catching up on old episodes so here is another bump)

Didn't they also do this on The Shield? It's been a while since I watched that show but I seemed to remember a plot line where some gang members did that.

They did. I think it was in the second season.
