Bob Odenkirk said in a podcast that aired around the launch of the series "I'm glad you liked Episode 1, Episode 2 and Episode 3, but just wait until you see Episode 6 and Episode 9". So looking forward to watch Episode 6 tonight....

Going to be a long wait for Season 2 of this show. It's amazing.

Amazing episode. Jonathan Banks should get some Emmy love for this one.

Doubtful. We know Mike doesn't end up in prison for murdering two police officers, but it will be interesting to see how he gets away with it at this point.

Random Thought. Anyone else think Mike's granddaughter was not much younger than when we saw her in Breaking Bad? I'd guess we will see Saul become Saul fairly quickly time wise.

Fantastic episode. As someone else already pointed out, Jonathan Banks deserves an Emmy nod, especially for the last 5 or so minutes of the episode.

He never admitted anything though. The only thing he said is that EVERY cop is dirty, and they killed his son.

It was just the way she asked "so who killed Hoffman and Fenske?" And "what happened then? "

Only issue was Kaylee seemed too old, shouldn't she have been around 2-3?

I could be wrong, but I just don't see her setting up her father-in-law for taking vengeance on the men who murdered her husband. And considering he's seeing his granddaughter in Breaking Bad it seems even less likely.

Fucking amazing, there really isn't much else to say about this episode. This series just gets better and better as it goes. Some great backstory to Mike and totally agree that Jonathan Banks should be up for an Emmy.

I do agree that the granddaughter's age seems a bit problematic because if this takes place in 2002 and Breaking Bad in 2009 she was probably four or five in this episode so she should be around eleven or twelve when she's seen on Breaking Bad which doesn't seem right.

Jonathan Banks IS Mike Ehrmantraut

From an interview with Variety on tonight's ep:

Variety: This is Mike’s hour, but he does call Jimmy for help. When you’re working with Bob Odenkirk do you ever break when he’s going on one of his ridiculous rants or saying something completely crazy?

JB: I don’t break much. You know, I don’t break because after years and years of doing this when people fall over on the set and laugh at each other or do whatever they’re doing, it’s a waste of time. The crew is standing around. Am I smiling inside? Do I smile and laugh afterwards? I certainly do. But I got a thing about the time element for my crew. I’ve seen — nice people, you understand, nice people — but when they’re really indulgent with the crew’s time, I’m going, “F— that!” You know? That’s bulls—.

Nothing really to add, but DAMN what a great episode. Best one so far - easily. I've enjoyed a lot of the episodes -- all of them to at least some extent, but this was the first that felt really substantial. It wasn't just amusing backstory, this one had gravitas and emotional heft that I feel had been missing from this show (partially because I just don't buy or care much about the Jimmy/Chuck dynamic).
How much of that is because this episode ties up loose ends and unanswered questions from Breaking Bad and how much of it is Johnathan Banks' amazing performance I couldn't say. But I do know I loved it and wouldn't mind him walking away with the Emmy (even if it's at the expense of Peter Dinklege and John Slattery)

I love the reacquiring theme that all these people can easily call out and spot that James is dirty at heart regardless on if he's trying to stick to the straight and narrow in doing elder law.

First Nacho and now Mike pointing out that they could smell how dirty he really is.

I loved this episode. It was great seeing Mike get patted down in the back of the cruiser, knowing he'd already planted a gun.

This particular episode is the type that wins shows the award for Best Drama.

And Banks is simply a lock for Supporting Actor nominations now. I will be watching this one again before next week's episode.

I hope the show bumps up to 12 episodes for Season 2.

Yeah, I noticed that, too.

The girl in this episode looked about seven or eight. Which would put her in her early teens during Breaking Bad, which is really too old to be playing in a park while her grandfather watches over her.

Don't know why they didn't go with a younger girl of about two or three unless they wanted to put the Philadelphia stuff back more than a couple of years.

It's already been announced long ago that it's a 13 episode second season.

I was wondering about the granddaughter stuff too. She looked way too old.

Every episode of Better Call Saul has been great, but I honestly forgot I was watching the spinoff and thought I was watching Breaking Bad.

Re: Better Call Saul (S1E06) -- "Five-O" -- 3/9/15

Yeah last night's episode had more of a Breaking Bad vibe to it. The story was heavier and more dark/gritty than Better Call Saul has been thus far. Not that that's a bad thing just both shows have distinct identities even though they are also very similar.

Feeling at the announcement of a Breaking Bad Spin off called Better Call Saul = Optimistic

Feeling after seeing the first episode = Enjoyment with a huge sense of relief that it wasn't getting screw up.

Feeling after watching episodes 2-5 = Feeling better and enjoying even more as each episode passes.

Feeling after watching Johnathan Banks enter the ranks of TV Super stardom in a stand out episode from a character that has been cool since day 1, and in an episode that was simply the top of its game = Utter disbelief that TV could be this good.

This show is going beyond my expectations. I was expecting greatness and its way beyond that.

Re: Better Call Saul (S1E06) -- "Five-O" -- 3/9/15

Yeah I definitely didn't think Better Call Saul was going to be very good. It just felt like AMC trying to milk one of their cash cows a bit more to me when they first announced it but its exceeded my expectations by far. I would say the series has at least matched Breaking Bad in terms of quality thus far. I wouldn't say I like it more but it definitely is about equal at this point.

So knowing what we know now, what was the significance of that scene at the end of <strike>Jello</strike> Alpine Shepherd Boy where Mike sees the gal we know know is his Daughter-in-law backing the car out of her driveway? Why would he be watching her and not talking to her?

Re: Better Call Saul (S1E06) -- "Five-O" -- 3/9/15

Great episode but the grandaughter age thing is really bothersome. She was 10 years old at about a year into the BB timeline. She needs to be 4 years old at the most. It's sort of shocking that they'd cast someone who is clearly older.

I guess I was wondering if he somehow found out before the cops from Philadelphia showed up at his door that they were in town looking for him. If that was the case I would assume that he was pissed at her for doing so.

That's unlikely because when the cops knock on his door, he grabs a baseball bat and cautiously approaches the door. You don't do that if you suspect that three cops are outside and are about to bring you in for questioning.

Neil M. 03-10-15 10:52 AM

Re: Better Call Saul (S1E06) -- "Five-O" -- 3/9/15

My interpretation of that was that Mike was being cautious. He knew that the Philly police were going to show up at some point. His daughter-in-law's face told him that they had been there. I think he grabbed the bat because he didn't think that she would tell them where he was living so he wasn't expecting them to show up at his doorstep.

The problem with my interpretation is that they should have easily found him through his employment.
