Re: The bottom of the barrel Cable Company?

TV Guide Channel isn't working. I can't recall something like that happening with Charter or Direct TV(but could be wrong).

Do they have listings anymore(TV Guide)? I thought those were discontinued years ago.

They did pull a lot of Channels (not sure if any of them returned)and told people to go elsewhere for programming. Would Direct TV tell their customers to go use Dish Network for the PAC 12 Network or The Longhorn Network?

Maybe you should actually find out the answers to all the things you didn't know before judging? They might actually suck, but it certainly doesn't seem like you have many concrete examples. As for the channels, they're no different from other carriers that have had price battles over channels

Those small companies cannot magically finance programming. Not much you can do about it. That is rural TV. Tell him to get Direct TV. Or move to a more populated location.

Communications infrastructure is complex. He might simply be too remote to get a good signal. If he's in a really remote area, he should be happy that they laid a line. If there's not enough power going through the line, there will be a problem. I have a similar problem with Cox. But it's because I live in the 'burbs and there's too many neighbors siphoning off the signal.

I grew up in rural area like that too with a small cable company. That company was eventually bought out by Comcast in the late 90s. But before that, people in the town I lived in ditched cable for satellite because they didn't like the service and then were some people in town who couldn't get a signal or they lived up on hills where cable companies refuse to put lines. I had a family friend who was one of those people up on the hill and he put in one of those C band satellites in the late 80s.

As for not having a guide, you can't access Comcrap channels on a non-QAM TV without a box. And on a QAM TV, you'd need at least a cablecard to access any channels besides the broadcast locals and public access channels.
At least in my area, you can't get ANYTHING without a cablecard, not even the local channels. All you get is a channel that plays video in a loop of how to setup your box.

And you call Barbara to rent a PPV viewing. If she's nice, she lets the signal on for a few movies after!

We have Dish, and we're happy with it.

Re: The bottom of the barrel Cable Company?

$5 a month for a box, $60 for the year. That sounds like a wonderful birthday present, or father's day or just for the hell of it present. I imagine once he gets used to the box he'll love it. Most companies have a box that is not a DVR or even if it is a DVR I'm pretty sure they don't force him to use it. He could still put the old VCR in between and record, tho I'd do that as a separate setup so I'd get the HD signal.

The TV Guide Channel has been gone, but that is because that changed format lol.

Most people didn't notice because most people have a digital guide or some other way to check channels.

The TV Guide Channel is back and running on my dad's cable. It sounds like they upgraded it so the grid moves faster. Hard to believe that this service is still available.

Oh, I remember the TV Guide Channel. It was useful, up till the early 2000's. Sucked to have to sit there for five minutes and wait. Or, if you were watching out for a line, you would get distracted by whatever, miss the line, and have to wait again.

He hates DVRs. He hates modern technology(computers, internet, cell phones). He still records with a VCR. One reason he doesn't want Direct TV is because you might lose the signal during a storm.

He could get Direct TV and Dish Network and still be paying less than his cable bill.

UPDATE: He went to the cable company today. They are having problems transmitting the TV Guide Channel and they don't know when it will be available. There is no digital program guide w/o the box(Mentioned before that I had digital guide w/Charter w/o the box). So basically he doesn't know what's on TV ahead of time.
can you look up what might be on, online and tell it to him. might be a way to get some dad time and talk about the old days before technology ruined everything.
