Modern Family (S6E09) - "Three Turkeys" - 11/19/14

IT'S NOT THANKSGIVING UNTIL YOU HAVE A MYSTERIOUS MULTITUDE OF TURKEYS, ON ABC'S "MODERN FAMILY"

"Three Turkeys" - Phil is cooking Thanksgiving dinner this year with Luke as his sous chef, and Claire has no confidence in them and prepares a secret turkey of her own as backup. Meanwhile, Jay and Gloria had plans to spend the holiday away but when the trip gets canceled last minute, they decide not to tell anyone which quickly becomes the worst idea ever since the family dinner gets suddenly moved to their house and it turns into a mad scramble to cover their tracks. And, Mitch is tired of always being the bad cop so when Lily refuses to wear a nice dress to dinner, he forces Cameron to deal with it who then comes up with a very unconventional approach, on "Modern Family," WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19 (9:00-9:31 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

I wonder if it's in the shows best interest to start pairing Mitch and Cam with other characters or if it's better to keep them together and just accept the fact that 1/3 of the show will be terrible.

They just need new writers for them.

Three Turkeys? I'm guessing Cam and Mitch are two of them.

For some reason, this reminded me of an episode of "Family Matters" or "Step by Step"

My family liked this one... then again, it's the only comedy we watch anymore.

The timeline confused me. One second they are showing Phil and Luke cooking in the kitchen of the Dunphy house. Then in the next scene you hear Phil in Jay's house saying he feels like having a Scotch.

Also, why would they have keys to Jay and Gloria's house? And, assuming they were given spares to watch over the house, what assholes for using the house for their Thanksgiving dinner and drinking Jay's Scotch.

I think you missed a few scenes. The newspaper cannon hit the fuse box, which required the relocation.

I live in the same town with a lot of family. We have each others keys, it's not that odd. Sometimes I've done things at my parents, including hosting parties there as an adult when they were out of town.

But the Scotch thing was dickish.

I forgot about the fuse box. Thanks.

Exactly what I had thought. It had typical sitcom routine written all over it.

Still an enjoyable episode considering the Season.

Not a bad episode. Not sure why, but I really laughed hard at Gloria's "Customs respects your customs" line...even though it's not technically THAT funny.

I liked the stuff between Manny and Haley a lot...especially when Manny broke the "third wall" and smiled at the camera after kissing Haley.

"Fourth wall", actually, and I don't know if you can consider this show having a fourth wall to break, since it's presented as sort of a mockumentary, and the characters acknowledge the camera quite frequently, albeit fleetingly.

I wonder how the actor that played Manny felt when he read that the script called for him to grab Hayley's breast. Probably pretty happy.

Isn't he gay? I remember that being mentioned in one of the threads back in season two (or perhaps three). Someone mentioned he must be in heaven every time Sophia Vergara would smoosh his face in her breasts, to which someone commented that the actor was reportedly gay.

I find no reference online suggesting he's gay.

There were so many shenanigans I was waiting for Mr Roper or Mr Furley to show up. The writers have no idea what to do with Alex anymore..

Other than her conversation with her mom and her reaction to Haley saying when Alex would have a boyfriend, I don't remember anything Alex did this whole episode.

Re: Modern Family (S6E09) - "Three Turkeys" - 11/19/14

The character of Alex has never really done a huge amount in the show other than being the smart person in a family of goofballs, ready with a sarcastic remark or eyeroll. They've done a little more with her recently, what with her preparing for college level courses and the inherent stress, but if I were to take a guess, I'd say they're reluctant to bring her too far to the forefront for fear of it turning into the Ariel's Boobs Show. Hell, they could technically make an entire episode about all the boobs in this family. Gloria's are always bouncing around, Haley's are constantly pushed up for display to anyone who'll take notice of her, and now Alex has come up through the ranks and is threatening to take over the top shelf with her top shelf.

Right, sorry...fourth wall - I don't think the characters have acknowledged the camera before in a NON-interview segment though, have they?

This is pretty common for this show though. Go back and watch several of the earlier season episodes. A LOT of them focus on misunderstandings that could be resolved if someone just said something. But they don't and they compile. I've always thought this show is a modern day Three's Company in many episodes.

Happens all the time. Like I said, though, it's always a quick look.

Google Now needs a Nigella Lawson voice option. I'd never stop asking it questions.
