Arthur C. Clarke’s ‘3001: The Final Odyssey’ Set As Syfy Miniseries From Scott Free
On the heels of recently greenlighting a miniseries adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End, Syfy is giving a miniseries treatment to another Clarke novel, 3001: The Final Odyssey, the fourth and final book in his Odyssey series.
3001, now in development, hails from Scott Free Prods. and Warner Horizon TV. Feature writer Stuart Beattie (Pirates Of The Caribbean, Collateral) will write the adaptation and serve as executive producer along with Scott Free’s Ridley Scott and David W. Zucker. Clayton Krueger will serve as co-executive producer.
Described as an epic story of a man lost in time and dark thematic meditations on the final fate of all Humankind, 3001 begins with the discovery of Frank Poole’s frozen body, floating in space, and resolves the tale that started in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Clarke’s Odyssey series spanned over 30 years, with the initial publication of 2001 in 1968, and the final 3001 in 1997. The opening book was immortalized by Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 classic feature adaptation. The second book, 2010: Odyssey Two, was the only other of the novels in the series to be brought to the screen as a 1984 movie directed by Peter Hyams. The 3001 adaptation is being done with the blessing and support of both the Kubrick and Clarke estates.
“I have always been a fan of Clarke’s extraordinary ‘Odyssey’ series, and certainly Kubrick’s adaptation of 2001. I am thrilled to be part of bringing that legacy to audiences and continuing the great cinematic tradition that this story and its creators deserve,” said Ridley Scott.

Interesting.... didn't Tom Hanks express interest in adapting/starring in this at one point? Hopefully this doesn't completely suck.

3001 ruins 2001 in so many ways. I don't see how they're going to make it into a miniseries. It's going to be as bad as SyFy's Riverworld.

Doesn't make any difference. There isn't really any kind of continuity between the books. From what I recall, there are numerous contradictions from book to book to the point they are four standalone novels that reuse characters and situations and can't be considered a tetralogy.

I think it's a shame that Arthur C. Clarke wrote any sequels to 2001: A Space Odyssey because it's something that's beyond having any sequels. And it's bad enough that one of his sequel novels was turned into a movie (2010), so adapting another of these novels is just a bad idea.

I like 2010. It's got a great cast with the always likeable Roy Scheider & John Lithgow, plus Bob Balaban and Helen Mirren. It's not the epic surreal mind trip 0f 2001 but I loved seeing the Discovery, HAL, Keir Dullea & the monolith again.

They should remake 2010 but include the subplot about the Chinese spaceship crashing on Europa. They could probably make a lot of money with it in the Chinese market these days.

I do, too. It's a good science fiction movie in and of itself, and it's a good attempt at a sequel to 2001. When one considers how easy it would be to completely screw up "2001 II," it's a bloody miracle it wasn't a total disaster.

Ditto on this, but where the movie fails is its director - Peter Hyams was a vacuous hack who rendered ordinary every film he touched.

So 2001 the film isn't an adaptation of 2001 the novel, although it may be considered an "adaptation" or "expansion" of some of Arthur C Clarke's previous short stories.
2010 is a book adaptation though, since the book came first and was adapted into a film.

This doesn't really seem like the best idea, mainly because it requires knowledge of the stories that came before it, but then 3001 also changes what came before. Hopefully it will be good, but has SyFy done any good miniseries recently?

Tin Man was pretty good. Although that was a while back and the last good one I can remember from them.
