Constantine (S1E01) -- Series Premiere -- "Non Est Asylum" -- 10/24/14

Series Synopsis:

Based on the wildly popular comic book series "Hellblazer" from DC Comics, seasoned demon hunter and master of the occult John Constantine (Matt Ryan, "Criminal Minds") is armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and a wickedly naughty wit. He fights the good fight - or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he's decided to abandon his campaign against evil until a series of events thrusts him back into the fray, and he'll do whatever it takes to protect the innocent. With the balance of good and evil on the line‎, Constantine will use his skills to travel the country, find the supernatural terrors that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows... maybe there's hope for him and his soul after all.

The cast also includes Harold Perrineau ("Lost") as Manny and Charles Halford ("True Detective") as Chas.

Writer Daniel Cerone ("The Mentalist," "Dexter") serves as executive producer with David S. Goyer ("Man of Steel," "The Dark Knight Rises"). "Constantine" is produced from Bonanza Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. The show is based upon characters published by DC Entertainment.

13 episode order as of right now

This explains why Harold Perrineau was killed off in the Pilot of Z Nation. Took a higher paying and higher profile gig.

Going to DVR this, hoping it's decent but it seems destined to fail.

Am I the only person who thought the Keanu Reeves movie wasn't that bad?

I didn't think much of it, but it wasn't Van Helsing bad by a long shot.

Swinton was fantastic in it.

I thought the movie was decent; nothing particularly amazing, but not bad either.

I wouldn't say it flopped. It made $230 million worldwide off a $100 million budget. $75 million of that was in the US.

As far as the Reeves film, as a supernatural movie, it wasn't bad. As a Hellblazer adaptation, it left a lot to be desired.

First episode was leaked a few months ago. However, I believe they changed the main actress so this version might be different.

I haven't watched the leaked copy. I'm betting there will be some confusion going on from people watching the leaked version .

Not surprising, the anti-smoking nazis won out and Constantine won't smoke, thus killing a major element of the character.

Agreed 100%.

It's not a bad movie if you can look at is sort of an urban fantasy Matrix, but it lost too much of the comic's nuance in the translation to the screen.

Finally A DC property that I like how the live action version turned out. Goes great with Grimm. Haven, Grimm and now Constantine being on Friday makes not having a life a little more tolerable.

I missed this, but a friend told me it was really good. Anybody know if NBC is re-airing the pilot?

Re: Constantine (S1E01) -- Series Premiere -- "Non Est Asylum" -- 10/24/14

It kind of felt like supernatural at its best. No problems with the acting. The special effects were great. The show seems like it costs a lot. They setup a few mystery. They had a few tie ins to other comics. I only read a few of the comics and show didn't feel much like I thought the character would be. Little girl dragged to hell, putting himself in a mental hospital, and occult stuff were all comic stuff.

I thought it was good first episode. I'd put it above Gotham and lower than Flash.

Never read one of the comics or seen the Keanue film. Really enjoyed it. Great tone, energy and pacing. Some good character lead exposition without getting dragged down.

Not sure why Lucy Griffiths was replaced post pilot. Is the character gone, or being recast. I think she did fine.

Yeah I thought she did fine. Her character is still alive but she is off the show. The girl at the end is the replacement.

Amazon Instant is offering it free if thats your thing.

I really liked what I saw. Regret they arent having John be a smoker. I wonder how many comparisons to Supernatural this thing is going to get?

Re: Constantine (S1E01) -- Series Premiere -- "Non Est Asylum" -- 10/24/14

I know nothing about the comic. As a show, it was boring. It had some cool effects, but I didn't like the lead actor's performance. He came off as arrogant the whole time, and the character was too much of a know-it-all. He and the female lead had zero chemistry together, unlike Ichabod and Abbie on Sleepy Hollow. I can't help but compare the two series because they're both shows about a man and a woman fighting demons together. At least Ichabod and Abbie are likeable, and there's humor on SH.
