SNL (s40e03) -- 10/11/14 -- H: Bill Hader -- MG: Hozier

The Return of Bill Hader... watch out F.A.N., he might take back his "Most Impressions" title!

... and I have no idea who the musical guest is.

He's got to bring back Stefon, right? Wonder if Seth Meyers makes an appearance, or if they just go with Jost?

Here's hoping they bring back the puppet sketch... (and if they do, it's purely because of Howard Stern).

I really want to see another Dateline sketch. Better yet, get the real Keith Morrison to appear as the killer so he can do those vocal things along with Hader.

This is the first time I have not heard anything about the musical guest in a while.

I just wished Hader came back as a permanent cast member again.

Looking forward to this. Still a few weeks away from Halloween but I'm hoping for some Vincent Price.

OK, West Coasters, here's how it's going so far:

The cold open was weak - anchored by an unfunny Bobby Moynihan impression on Kim Jong Un.

There are a couple cameos in Bill's monologue, and he does try to sing.

Weekend Update will be late, bc if a well deserved Jan Hooks tribute (good job, Lorne)

But Bill Hader is sort of phoning it in right now

Hozier has a pretty catchy song called "Take Me to Church". I haven't heard it get much radio play yet but it's got a decent sound that could very easily break out to be a hit. Haven't heard anything else from him/them so who knows if it's a one hit wonder if not.

When I saw last week the MG this week was Hozier I thought... who?!?
But I've heard this song and thought it was pretty good, so it certainly beats the tween queen flavor of the week like last weeks MG.

Puppet sketch. I hope they bring that back more often.

I thought the show was alright tonight. Great cold open with Carvey doing Bush. The sketch with everyone kissing eachother was funny, and I love Middle Aged Man.

Can't believe they had the B-52s on there and they didn't do Love Shack or Roam! Amazing.

Alec Baldwin made a decent host, I wouldn't mind seeing him back to host again.

Pretty cool they brought back the puppet sketch by request. I liked that they had a couple of the old guard filling in on a few sketches. I just haven't seen any potential star break-outs amongst the current crop. Then it all comes down to funny ideas, great writing and talented execution of of both. Still waiting...

Was hader the host? Or wiig? Yeesh.

Other than too much of her, I liked it. Loved the return of the puppet sketch.

Weekend update was ok, of course loved the return of stefon.

Really don't like the new digital short things. Don't think I've ever found one funny over the past 2 seasons.

I wasn't thrilled to see the puppet sketch. I've already seen it. And if I want to see it again, I can go online. Why not give us something new?

I wouldn't want it to repeat any more, but I liked seeing it again due to hader being back. Also, I thought it was funny again.

Now, the return of the old reporter, not funny.

The puppet sketch was amazingly dark and I loved every minute of it.

Stefon's return was fantastic and it was great knowing Mulaney clearly fucked Hader with the constant mentioning of Dan Cortese.

Che was on it last night, especially with his interaction with Davidson and Stefon, while Jost still sucks.

Everything else was awful. Wiig ruined both the monologue and the Hollywood Game Night sketch. If you're going to give us Wiig, at least bring back Armisen so we could've gotten another Californians sketch.

Maloney would routinely add in lines to the prompts between dress and air to purposely screw with Bill. That's one of the reasons he breaks character so much and laughs during the segments.

I knew that there was extra stuff making him laugh but not sure why I would know it was Mulaney and maybe a word was missing that changes the meaning of what Matthew was getting at.

"Stefon's return was fantastic and it was great knowing Mulaney clearly fucked WITH Hader with the constant mentioning of Dan Cortese.

The first time I saw "Love Is a Dream" when it aired in 1988 my reaction was "Did I miss something? What was the funny part?" I was a little more of a mainstream viewer for SNL sometimes and didn't get nuances. But having seen it when Jan Hooks herself very tearfully introduced it after Hartman died in 1998, it made much more sense and I recognized the poignancy, almost like it was always meant to be a tribute. Now seeing it played again for Jan Hooks, it really made me so sad, yet happy for both of them. It is so much more beautiful and has greater meaning because of their presence.

Those Tom Schiller films were all really cool, and I feel like I get them more now than I did when they were a regular part of the show.

They really shouldn't do mawkish bits on SNL.

It's like those are cursed.

There was the one with Belushi as an old man visiting the graves of his cast mates.

And then the song between Hartman and Farley when Phil was leaving.

And now Love is a Dream.

It's public knowledge that when Mulaney and Hader wrote the Stefon skits, Mulaney would change the cue cards at the last minute without Hader's knowledge. This became an ongoing thing and why Hader keeps laughing during the Stefon bits.

Hader and Mulaney wrote Saturday's Stefon skit together (even with them being on opposite coasts), but Mulaney emailed Rob Klein (one of the head writers) before the show aired asking him to make changes to the cue cards.

Klein changed them and told nobody.

Mulaney and Hader have both talked about it in multiple interviews. It's even in the Wikipedia entry for Stefon.

Chalk me up as someone who didn't know, either. That's pretty funny, though, and definitely explains why Hader (who normally does not break character) ALWAYS breaks character while playing Stefon.

Mulaney's personal Instagram shows the email he sent to Klein with one of the changes being that of adding Dan Cortese to every club.

I'm a fan of the show even though it stinks anymore but I don't know why anyone would be following mulaney on instagram or reading Stefans wiki. Never heard of Mulaney before seeing that he has his own show now.

That's enough I guess. Who's on next week?
