The Flash (S1E01) -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 10/7/14

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7

SERIES PREMIERE

THE FLASH

"Pilot" - (8:00-9:02:54 p.m. ET) (TV-PG, LV) (HDTV)

THE FASTEST MAN ALIVE IS BORN - Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) was just 11 years old when his mother was killed in a bizarre and terrifying incident and his father (John Wesley Shipp) was falsely convicted of the murder. With his life changed forever by the tragedy, Barry was taken in and raised by Detective Joe West (Jesse L. Martin), the father of Barry's best friend, Iris (Candice Patton). Now, Barry has become a brilliant, driven and endearingly geeky CSI investigator, whose determination to uncover the truth about his mother's strange death leads him to follow up on every unexplained urban legend and scientific advancement that comes along. Barry's latest obsession is a cutting edge particle accelerator, created by visionary physicist Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) and his S.T.A.R. Labs team members, Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) and Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes), who claim that this invention will bring about unimaginable advancements in power and medicine. However, something goes horribly wrong during the public unveiling, and when the devastating explosion causes a freak storm, many lives are lost and Barry is struck by lightning. After nine months in a coma, Barry awakens to find his life has changed once again - the accident has given him the power of super speed. Thrilled with his new powers, Barry learns how to control them with the help of Dr. Wells and his team. However, keeping his secret from his best friend Iris (Candice Patton) is proving to be harder than he thought, especially when Joe's new partner, Eddie Thawne (Rick Cosnett), catches her eye. When another meta-human attacks the city, it's time to put Barry's new powers, and himself, to the test. David Nutter directed the episode with story by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kresiberg and Geoff Johns and teleplay by Andrew Kreisberg and Geoff Johns (#101). Original airdate 10/7/2014.

Stupid 3 minute overrun. I could record it, but miss those last 3 minutes.

This shit has really become annoying, and you know it's not because there's extra material, since they're airing in a 58 minute slot the next night.

According to a story I read, it's actually 3 minutes of content, not extended commercial time. They apparently shot some new footage that wasn't seen in the leaked pilot.

I liked it, and will keep watching. I didn't know John Wesley Shipp was in it---cool. I loved his Flash series.

It's annoying that we have news on at 7 here, so it airs an hour later than it should. On same time as Shield.

Re: The Flash (S1E01) -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 10/7/14

So who is Harrison (H. G.?) Wells?

professor Zoom(reverse flash)
One of the other Flashes, Bart?

During the fight of the flashing lights that resulted in the death of Barry's Mom there was a decent image
of Reverse Flash but there was also a lot of red in there. So this was a battle between RF and another Flash from the future?

The date on the future news article that show the merger of Wayne and Queen companies with a headline that Flash is missing, was this when a future Flash first appeared?

The news article is an easter egg for Crisis on Infinite Earths. It says Flash disappeared in a "crisis." Barry died in COIE. Also notice it mentions red skies. The skies turned red in COIE.

Eobard Thawne was seen in the episode as a police officer, and I think most people will assume he is Reverse Flash since he is in the comics. However, I think he is a red herring and Harrison Wells is actually Reverse Flash. The fact that he is hiding a newspaper article from ten years in the future makes me think this, and obviously the wheelchair is the perfect cover for a guy to hide his super-speed.

Loved it. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Honestly, if the script was fleshed out a bit more, this would have made for a great Flash movie. Really not much more to say other than I can't wait to see more. My only worry is that it starts to become like Smallville with the constant freak of the week episodes. Also was kinda bummed about how lame Weather Wizzard was. But yeah an easy 5/5 for me.

Re: The Flash (S1E01) -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 10/7/14

Enjoyed it. I will say it felt rushed (no pun intended), and could have used an extra 5-10 minutes to find its legs (no pun, I promise!).

Seems like they have some good actors and supporting characters to help flew out the world Barry inhabits.

I noticed Gorilla Grood as well.

So my first though with the wheel chair setup and paper from the future - what if the guy is supposed to be a take on Metron? Might be a bit futuristic, but maybe he'll be a "grounded" version?

Is there anyone other than me that watches these shows without knowing crap about comic books?

I thought it was good.

Nice they got Shipp. I watched the '90-91 Flash as a kid and loved that show.

Re: The Flash (S1E01) -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 10/7/14

Many, many years ago, a young boy spotted a very spiffy comic book cover featuring the fastest man alive with spectacular art by Carmine Infantino. Barry Allen is the character that got me into comic books and I am not sure I would have ever read another one if not for his fundamental goodness.

After the failure of his show on CBS, I never imagined he'd get a second chance on television. I had consciously stayed far away from the leaked pilot and spoilers, I wanted to experience it with fresh eyes and hopeful optimism. It far surpassed my expectations from the opening scene, this is the character I had been reading since I was a child. I could quibble about some of the tiny alterations like Barry and Iris having grown up together, but almost everything in this pilot hit just the right chord with me.

I was prepared to dislike the detective but they handled him with far more class than I imagined. I like the cast and have fully come around on Grant Gustin, he makes a great Flash. I would hope they refine the costume design a little. I love the nods to its comic book origins, I hope they lightly brighten its fabric over time.

I won't tell you the exact scene but I believe we saw a glimpse of Max Mercury in this episode.

Bring on Zoom.

Re: The Flash (S1E01) -- Series Premiere -- "Pilot" -- 10/7/14

It was good seeing Jesse L. Martin again from Law and Order. I think he's a solid addition and I liked that he knows about Barry's power.

I'm curious about the Harrison Wells character. That final scene with the "future" newspaper gave me the impression that he has some kind of ulterior motive and may not be a "friend" to Barry.

It looked like they loosely tied in this episode to the Arrow episode from last season that featured Barry's accident but expanded it more. I don't recall Felicity mentioning last season when we got an update about Barry that he was in a coma, especially for 9 months.

Of course. Millions of people watch TV, but only a few thousand people actually read comics. It's just that nerds (comic readers) are more likely to post on internet message boards than "regular" people.
