Disney, Lucasfilm Animation Prep ‘Star Wars Rebels’ Series For 2014 Launch

Production has begun on Star Wars Rebels, an exciting, all-new animated television series based on one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time. Scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, it will be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.

Leading the development of the series is a creative team of exceptional talent. Screenwriter/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) is an executive producer on Star Wars Rebels and will write the premiere episode. He is joined by Dave Filoni as executive producer, who served as supervising director of the Emmy nominated Star Wars: The Clone Wars since 2008. Executive producer Greg Weisman brings with him a wealth of animation experience with credits such as Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Gargoyles.

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, "The entire team at Lucasfilm has provided extraordinary creativity and innovation for over three decades, and we're thrilled to be bringing the expansive and imaginative world of Star Wars to Disney XD's viewers."

"I couldn't be more excited to explore new corners of the Star Wars universe," said Kathleen Kennedy, president, Lucasfilm. "I think Star Wars Rebels will capture the look, feel and fun that both kids and their parents love about Star Wars."

The action-filled series is set between the events of Episode III and IV -- an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen. Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. Details about the show are a closely guarded secret at this point.

Star Wars Rebels will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation, featuring many of the key talents that made Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Fans attending Star Wars Celebration Europe will be the first to get an exclusive look at the new series. Casting will be announced at a later date. More information about this developing project will be found on StarWars.com and on Facebook at facebook.com/starwarsrebels.

I really hope this isn't dumbed down for kids and I really hope it isn't CGI.

Set between III and IV? I'm all in. Hated that they cancelled Clone Wars because when it was good it was great but I'm much more interested in the 16 year gap between III and IV than the Clone Wars at this point.

I hope it's not the same type of animation as the Clone Wars

Too far away for me to get excited. I remember a rumor that this would be about young Leia. Hoping it'll be good as the Avengers cartoon.

19 but your point is valid. I mean, 19 frickin years of rebellion against a juggernaut of an Empire. It makes me think Palpatine and Vader suffered a lot of setbacks over those years, or they were playing cool until they could bring the Death Star online.

I wonder if they'll dare show any stories of young Luke and Leia. It'll be hard to show any Luke stories that connect to the bigger picture, Leia we know was involved with the Rebellion for some time.

The Avengers cartoon that was just cancelled was not a Disney production. It was a Marvel production. This new one that starts in July is a Disney production. Unfortunately, the new Avengers cartoon looks like it is watered down a bit for kids, but we won't know for sure until they start airing it.

With Dave Filoni involved it's pretty safe to assume that this will look similar. With Jedi involved it'll be easy to wrap up a lot of the loose ends from Clone Wars and characters like Ashoka could even be heavily featured.

This almost seems like a revamped version of Clone Wars. Some of this stuff could take place like 2 years after the previous show.

Guess I'm different then most people since I loved the look of the Clone Wars. They got AMAZING visuals for a weekly show. Some of the space shots could easily have been used in a live action movie. Glad Dave Filoni's involved.

They've built up a lot of character models in Clone Wars. Tons of varietys of aliens so a crowd of aliens isn't the same aliens. You get pretty much every type of alien from the movies. The only thing that bugged me a little in Clone Wars was people had squarish fingers, instead of round. The beards on people looked strange early on but they got much better at them later.

Don't expect Luke to be in it much if any. I could see one episode set on Tatooine with a young Luke meeting Obi-Wan. Luke knew him in ANH so they did meet beforehand.

Leia could be in several episodes since she was in the rebellion working with Senator Organa

Maybe show young cadet Han Solo and how he saved Chewbacca from being a slave & got kickout of the Empire. Probably even work Lando in there and show Han winning the Falcon.

On the plus side. DARTH VADER in his prime!

Every so often, they should just cut to random shots of Luke working on the farm and whining.

And being chased by womp rats.

I would much rather see an animated series of the X Wing books done in the style of Tron Uprising.

I though Luke was supposed to be younger than that in in ANH?

Disney absolutely gutted Marvel's shows and IP's intended for DisneyXD. I don't expect much from anything appearing on the channel.

So once again, the most compelling story, and the one best suited for the big screen, becomes a cartoon.

Wait, so there will be a new jedi in this?

Will it address exactly why Yoda sat on his bum for 19 years, growing older and more feeble?

Looks too kiddy for me, but I'm sure kids will dig it.

Wasn't there talk about this show before the Disney buyout?

There was talk of a live action show that took place during this era. Apparently the scripts are written, and just collecting dust.

They have something like 30 episodes of an animated comedy program set in the Star Wars universe written by Seth Green that has been shelved, for fear of corrupting the brand before Episode VII.

Star Wars: Detours

I've heard a bunch of episodes are actually complete, but they're just sitting around. Hopefully, Disney will eventually let them see the light of day.

Maybe they're waiting until after they remaster the OOT in 4K. And maybe I'm a billionaire.
