I too think Fringe is a great way to get a post X-Files fix. And unlike X, they did a better job of mixing the procedural and the mythology rather than almost always having it one or the other.
And the last few seasons don't suck.

Up until the finale they were all "Monster of the Week" type episodes. I can understand a boring complaint (disagree though) but predictable? With no "clear" over arching story, in what way was it predictable? At any rate, like hdmmickey said, Fringe is a perfect way to get a post X-files fix. Anyone lamenting no X-files owes it to themselves to give it a shot.

Maybe it's been too long since I watched the first season, but I thought they touched on their own mythology far earlier in the season. Certainly more in S2, but S1 has it's share. Much of what was to come out about the past of three main characters had it's start in many of the S1 episodes.

I never actually watched X-Files when it originally aired, but someone gave me the DVD box set last Christmas. I finally got around to watching it last month, and I just finished season three. I'm enjoying the mythology eps, but frankly, I think the majority of the monster of the week eps are kind of dumb. How many times can Mulder be right and Scully be wrong before she finally just starts listening to him? It's getting annoying.
Anyway, I'll watch them all eventually and would probably watch new ones too.

I loved X-Files...I got bored with FRINGE. I still haven't seen the final season. I think most of Season 4 sat on my DVR for almost a year before I got around to finishing it...I gave up after that. I did like Seasons 2 and 3, though.

I'm probably in the minority, but I thought the last season of Fringe was pretty weak. Not S9 of X-Files bad, but kind of a lame ending to the series IMO.

Fringe had its own set of problems.
I can't say I was a fan of the reset that occurred at the end of season three. And they also didn't really seem to know what to do with William Bell (Nimoy) and the stuff with him at the end of season four really came out of left field.

That was the issue..I think I gave it around 7-8 episodes before I finally dropped out, which is about 4-5 episodes more than I give most tv shows. Gave Fringe A lot of time, because I loved the premise. Now I just don't have enough time to try to watch the entire season.

JMO, but the only problem I had with it is that the end scene was so predictable. More so than Lost. But unlike Lost, I thought they still made most of the season and finale enjoyable despite knowing how it would end.

Hey can we try to avoid Fringe spoilers in an X-Files thread, please?

Bumping this because I discovered the X-Files is airing in HD on the El Rey network now.
The schedule seems a little erratic but at least it's going in order. The Erlenmeyer Flask (season 1 finale) is about to air.
I must say it looks pretty good.

A shame most people don't get El Rey in HD.

Back in the day, I largely dismissed shows like X-Files, etc ... due to bad experiences with a particular acquaintance.
At the time, I had a very talkative acquaintance that was heavily into conspiracy theory type stuff. For some strange reason, this person thought tv shows like X-Files, Psi Factor, etc ... were actually a legitimate source of factual information on such conspiracy/ufo topics. (They probably would have felt at home in a cult like Heaven's Gate). The few times I was at this person's home, it just happened X-Files or Psi Factor was on. It was as if they were in a "trance" while watching such tv shows.
With all that being said, I only started to watch X-Files in 2011. (Many years after such weird acquaintances were no longer in my life, I could watch it for its entertainment value with very little prior bias).

re: The X-Files (FOX) -- Season 10 Rumors, News, Speculation
More generally, I didn't realize there was a huge sci-fi/fantasy tv show renaissance during the 1990's and 2000's. (I was almost completely ignorant of then-current tv shows and movies, from the late 1980's to around 2007).
When I first started buying a lot of dvds/blurays in 2011, I noticed a lot of heavily discounted sci-fi/fantasy tv shows in the local bargain bins which I didn't really watch before, such as: Babylon 5, Millennium, Stargate franchise, X-Files, Andromeda, the new Battlestar Galactica, Heroes, Xena, Hercules, Sanctuary, Warehouse 13, Fringe, Eureka, Sliders, Quantum Leap, etc ... After buying and watching through some of these season sets, I came to the realization sci-fi had come a long way from the cheesy 1970's/1980's (and earlier) stuff.
When I was younger, I thought most sci-fi looked like a joke on tv. I use to really like the original Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek when I was a kid/preteen.
The then-final tv show I paid attention to back in the late-1980's, was the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. At the time, I thought the first season of ST:TNG was kinda mediocre. So I didn't bother following TNG much in its original first-run after season 1. (It was only years later that I came to the realization that ST:TNG got a lot better in the middle with season 3). For that matter, most of the other tv shows I was still watching at the time were also becoming mediocre, such as: MacGyver, Miami Vice, 21 Jump Street, etc ... in their middle/final seasons.
