James Garner Dead -- Legendary Actor Dies at 86

Legendary actor James Garner -- star of "The Rockford Files" and "The Notebook" -- has died ... TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us an ambulance was dispatched to the actor's home in Los Angeles around 8PM Saturday evening ... and he was dead when they arrived on scene.

We do not know his cause of death at this time.

Garner was one of the first actors to amass success in both television and film ... and he starred in a long list of classic films -- as well as a co-starring role in the '94 big screen version of "Maverick" starring Mel Gibson. Garner was the original Bret Maverick from 1957-1960 ... as well as the same character in a short lived '80s remake.

Garner, who was 86 years old, also played the older version of Ryan Gosling's character in "The Notebook."

Always thought he was a great actor. I use to watch The Rockford Files with my grandmother when I was a kid. Looks like the last thing he did was voiceover work as Shazam in Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam.

R.I.P. Maverick.

:( One of my favourites.

Didn't know of his work since "8 Simple Rules".

He has left behind an impressive legacy.

RIP

I know it was not considered one of his best movies but I remember him from My Fellow Americans with Jack Lemmon.

I thought NBC was going to reboot the Rockford Files?

A big Raiders fan.

That was actually the first movie I thought of when seeing this topic. I thought it was a pretty underrated movie.

"I was Time Magazine's Man of the Year."

"So was Hitler."

"Not twice!"

Anyone who doesn't like that can eat me.

I think they shot a pilot with Dermot Mulroney and didn't like the results, so they shelved it. I'm not sure if it even aired.

There's an apt quote in the follow-up comments:

A couple of years ago when they tried to reboot Rockford as a series I saw a quote credited to Tom Selleck [...]<br>the only way to make a Rockford series was with James Garner.

I know it was Lemon's character, not Garner's, but I can't hear "Hail to the chief" without hearing the "Hail to the chief, he's the chief and he needs hailing." lyrics.

Aw man :(

One of my favorite role was as F. Ross Johnson in HBO's Barbarians at the Gate.

"We've spent 350 million dollars and we come up with a turd with a tip? God almighty, Ed! We put enough technology in this project to send a cigarette to the moon and we come up with one that tastes like it took a dump?"

Just heard about this when they paid tribute to him during the Formula 1 race broadcast. Also loved his work in both Grand Prix and The Great Escape.

I'll echo the love for My Fellow Americans, and add Skin Game as another underrated movie.

I just recently watched the first season of the Rockford Files. Garner was really the entire show. He just had seemingly effortless charisma.

He and Mariette Hartley made me want to buy a Polaroid camera.

Sad to hear. Not necessarily a terribly good movie, but Tank was always a guilty pleasure of mine. Garner was typically great in whatever he was in.

Very sad news, a great actor and a good man. I always heard positive things about him from fans who have met him, he was a very down to earth guy.

And he was married to the same woman for 58 years....now that is remarkable in Hollywood!

Rockford was his masterwork, but "Murphys Romance" was a close second and most definitely under-appreciated.

Pretty creepy that first John Ritter and now James Garner have died. It's almost like there's an 8 Simple Rules curse.

My mother's favorite actor, he will be missed. I've always thought the movie version of Maverick was the best theatrical adaptation of a television show.

Ummm...he didn't actually kill him in MARLOWE. He just sort of manipulated him into a fatal accident.

The soldiers who shot Lee at the end of THE CHINESE CONNECTION were the "only men to kill Bruce in a movie."

Getting back to Garner. I saw him on TV in "Maverick" as a child and then on the big screen in THE GREAT ESCAPE and THE WHEELER DEALERS. He was really good in the 1960s comedies he made in addition to WHEELER DEALERS, e.g. THE ART OF LOVE, A MAN COULD GET KILLED, and two with Doris Day, THE THRILL OF IT ALL and MOVE OVER DARLING. He was the best thing in the MAVERICK reboot in 1994.

We may lose David Spade 11 years from now.
