The soldiers who shot Lee at the end of THE CHINESE CONNECTION were the "only men to kill Bruce in a movie."

A fight is a fight and Garner obviously outmaneuvered him. As for the soldiers that doesn't count because he committed suicide and the name of the movie will always be called Fist of Fury. It was his choice to die not theirs.

As a kid, I always loved when Support Your Local Sheriff! or Support Your Local Gunfighter were on TV. James Garner was so casually cool. I wanted him for an uncle.

RIP

I know. It is crazy. We may all lose those actors to death eventually. :(

I'm glad I'm not the only one who appreciated him in My Fellow Americans (which is very underrated, IMO). That's really the only thing I ever saw him in, save for some Maverick repeats I caught off and on in the early 90s as a kid.

I had to look it up to realize he wasn't related to Jennifer Garner. I had always thought that he was her grandfather, but then saw that he has a stage name.

The duo of him and Donald Pleasence was the best in Great Escape.

I'm another person who loved My Fellow Americans. I did watch Maverick reruns as a kid and Garner was pretty good on 8 Simple Rules.

I remember watching those movies on TV as well as the Rockford Files. An American legend.

Could Kaley Cuoco be next?

I have to DVR My Fellow Americans the next time it shows up on HBO or cable.

I think he also did some narration for some commercials too? He has that voice which is ideal for doing stuff like that.

I think a lot of people will remember him for that overrated movie from 2004 with Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams.

I won't mention the name.

Yeah, considering it looks like there's only been a Full Screen DVD released back in 1997. It was reissued in 2012 as part of a 4-Film Favorites collection, but it's still Pan & Scan.

The iTunes version is HD but it's $15. A little too rich for my cheap blood.

Don't know why Warner hasn't fixed that- I bought the letterboxed laserdisc when it was being cleared out. Remembering that was one reason a lot of the LD people wanted DVD to fail- practically everything was being released in widescreen on LD (though they don't do you much good now on a widescreen TV), but only the stuff that the studios felt really 'deserved' it got the same treatment on DVD, everything else was 4x3 pan and scan.

I remember a TV Guide story about him in the 70s. It began with James Garner is like Sarah Lee. Nobody doesn't like him. My Mom named my youngest brother James Scott Garner after him.

I remember that too, but I can't remember the exact commercials.

I used to watch re-runs of The Rockford Files with my dad when I was a little kid. My dad died in 2001 but when I hear the Rockford theme music I still immediately think back to those days of sitting with him watching the show and it makes me smile.

I can thank James Garner for that.

That's worth cherishing. I lost my dad that same year and have similar TV-related memories. Glad I have those.

Wasn't a Maverick fan back in the day (early 60's...too young to appreciate the humor), but love it now.

By the time NICHOLS came along, was a huge fan. Hated that show got canceled after only one season (although it's now available on DVD). A little ahead of its time.

Tried to find a clip of Garner's great pistol-twirling routine he did while maintaining a constant patter of dialogue in the Maverick Season 3, episode 7 program titled "Full House." In the scene, Bret Maverick is showing off for the hardest desperadoes in the West (Billy the Kid, etc.). Garner does all kinds of fancy tricks & border shifts & ends up with an amazing (perhaps accidental) landing of the gun BACKWARD in his holster...I think after flipping it over his shoulder). Great scene done in one take (no edits).

If anyone can find that clip & post it, it's hugely entertaining.
