I don't understand why the Russians are chasing them for the cure, when their spy has no doubt told them that they have no cure.

Unless I missed where they said cure I took it as they wanted the scientist so they could control the cure once it is found. I only remember them saying you have what we want on board. Figured the spy said that she was close and just needed some supplies to continue to work on it. That is just speculation though. I would think each country would want it first so they would not have to negotiate with other countries or wait for their turn.

Seems kind of stupid of a move for the russians to just be flat out evil here. What was the problem in letting the Russian scientist just snatch away the cure once it's done? Act like allies to the Americans opposed to start some shit?

Also, why do they believe the Americans won't share it once it's ready?

Unless they took the scientist looking at the birds in the artic in secret and not including other countries as them not planning on sharing. But like others said, they have someone involved in the cure first hand so why force their hand so soon?

I know a show like this can't be 100% accurate on everything, but they obviously they aren't making shit up without any proper technical knowledge.
You're entitled to your opinion and I don't mind your snarky remarks. But, you can't deny that they put alot of effort into the technical production of this show and got the support they needed to pull it off as well.

I get the feeling it's all about controlling the cure and the sickness. A "One World Order" really. It does seem silly though considering most the population is gone anyway. Unless the Russians know something they (the ship) dont know about the population.

I am enjoying this. The characters are not acting stupid yet and when they do such when the guy got blood on himself last week, they resolve the issues quickly and generally make the right decisions. It is so much better than the confusing things going on with Falling Skies. That show is now a complete mess.

Re: The Last Ship (S1E01) -- New TNT action series -- "Pilot - Phase Six" -- 6/22/14
I assume this is laser guided but who knows and yes I would have thought a 5" gun taking out a chopper was a bit "lucky". The sea whizz seems to be the best way to do it once its locked on and unloading a ridiculous amount of lead. I am not a gun person or naval warship person so who knows.
(Coming in late to the game, just caught the Pilot off XBMC a few minutes ago.)
The "Sea Whizz" is the nickname for the Phalynx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS). It is the last line of defense for naval vessels against short-range incoming missiles and enemy aircraft. It fires high-velocity 20mm shells from a 6-barrel Gatling Gun at a rate of 75 rounds PER SECOND. (No shit!). It has a maximum range of just over 4 Km, though even with a muzzle velocity of approximately 1000 m/s the rounds do suffer from flight trajectory perturbations at that range, which reduces the Phalanx's median kill envelope to just about 500 meters.
It is designed to take out incoming objects, not necessarily dodging/orbiting helicopters. Missiles and fixed-wing aircraft when inbound toward the ship don't have the ability to change their relative ship-to-target bearing at a high rate ... the Phalanx excels in engagements such as those. Helos that are orbiting the ship, changing their bearing rapidly and unpredictably, will have a better chance of surviving as the CIWS has to predict the target's movement and aim ahead of it accordingly. CIWS *can* kill a helo, it's just a lot harder than killing other types of threats.
Arleigh Burke-class Destroyers are equipped with the AEGIS Combat System, which gives the ship an effective anti-aircraft shield. The SM-2 Standard Missile is designed for surface-to-air engagements, and would have been the system/missile used to take out the helos. The The 5-inch 62 calibre gun is not (I repeat, NOT) anti-aircraft capable.... chalk that up to "artistic license".

Still enjoying this show. I'm glad it's more Navy-related, rather than an outbreak plot.

Cool episode. I liked that it was a battle of wits between Chandler and the Russian captain. It was definitely more Navy action, than virus focused this week. The Russian captain was pretty hardcore killing his own man.
The sneak attack was cool, but I hated the guy acting like a bitch afterwards because his girlfriend wouldn't listen to him. That was really my only complaint.
But it looks like Scott's Assistant's wife is still being held captive by the Russians.

Really enjoying this series. I can understand the Navy's cooperation with this show, plenty of naval action. Good stuff.
Still a little reliance on cliches. Did not like the "lovers" action on the boat. Would a trained SEAL act that way?
I did like the the fact the captain was hard pressed to answer the traitor's question. Would any of us ask for help or would we do what he did, try to save our family?

I liked it. I imagine viewers with real knowledge about the military hardware and tactics involved might think most of it was ridiculous, but for me--ignorance is bliss.

My favorite episode so far. Even if it did just seem like a greatest hits of the so many navy movies that came before.

I think this is more of a guy show. I'm not liking it much at all. It's way too much of just blowing things up and what little they've devoted to the virus (what the series is supposed to be about) is confusing and kind of a mishmash.

Totally real to me. Come on, you wouldn't give up Rhona Mitra either if the world was near ending haha.

Maybe it's just me, but I find the woman that was standing in for the doctor more attractive that the doctor herself. But I too still found the backing off of the throttle due to "love" being the worst part of an overall great episode. So unbelievable. Hopefully the script writers have got that kind of stuff out of their system now.

OK so how did they save the two people that drove the C-4 boat into the Russian ship? They were pretty close when they jumped in the water. Seems the Russians would make a point to either kill them or capture them since they were only a few hundred feet away. Did the US ship send a raft that close to the Russians undetected to pick them up. Did they swim far enough away to not be in danger anymore before pickup?
