The Night Shift (NBC) -- Series Thread

The Night Shift
Welcome to the night shift, where the toughest and craziest cases always seem to come through the door. Every shift is a fight between the heroic efforts of saving lives and the hard truths of running an underfunded hospital.
At San Antonio Memorial, the men and women who work the night shift are an irreverent and special breed, particularly adrenaline junkie TC Callahan (Eoin Macken, "Merlin"). After three grueling tours of duty in Afghanistan, TC is about to learn that his toughest battles will be fought right here at home.
He and his irreverent team of late-night docs, including his best friend Topher (Ken Leung, "Lost") and protégé Drew (Brendan Fehr, "Roswell"), know how to let off steam with the casual prank or two, but when lives are at stake, they are all business.
New night shift boss - and TC's ex-girlfriend - Dr. Jordan Alexander (Jill Flint, "The Good Wife") struggles to keep everyone in check, but TC doesn't make it easy. Paul (Robert Bailey Jr., "Coraline") is fresh out of medical school and still adjusting to the rigors of an emergency room. Krista (Jeananne Goossen, "Alcatraz"), also a new intern, has something to prove, while Kenny (JR Lemon, "Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas") is a seasoned nurse who keeps the doctors focused and isn't afraid to break a few rules to get the job done.

The ensemble works really well together and the show has taken a lot of opportunities to try and develop characters. I feel like all of them already have more personality than any of characters in the Blacklist.
I didn't know anything about the show, so it was cool to see:
Brendan Fehr (Roswell)
Ken Leung (Lost)
Jill Flint (Royal Pains)

I've been watching and I like it. My main complaint is I don't think the actor who plays TC is very good, but I like the rest of the cast. Jill Flint is a very good looking lady.

Thought I'd give an update in this. 5 episodes in and I'm really enjoying this. I think it could have done well enough as a Monday show in the fall or spring actually.
Characters continue to receive good development.
Scott Wolf has joined the show, although I don't know if it's for a few episodes or longer term.

At first after looking at the promo shots from a distance I thought Peter Petrelli from Heroes was the star of the show.

This news is worth a thread bump...Deadline is reporting that we will see a second season (and with more episodes than originally planned)!
I like the cast and how they interact with each other, so this is great news.

My gf has really gotten into this show. I've watched two episodes and think it's pretty good. I'm not surprised it's getting a 2nd season.

I kind of like this show. Wasn't expecting it to get renewed. Assumed it was just summer burnoff, so the renewal is a pleasant surprise.
I saw season 2 is 14 episodes. I hope they keep it on during the summer. This show will easily get lost in the Fall and Spring.

I gave this show a shot but it is just brutally cheesy.

Just wrapped up the last two eps of the first season. Again, every enjoyable, reasonably suspenseful with likeable characters. Glad it's coming back next year.

Just caught up with last two episodes. Some really great character moments. It was nice to see some storylines carry through for each of the characters for all of the episodes.
I'd also like to take a moment to praise the shocking events in episode 7. They were a surprise, but also I didn't see them coming. The director did a great job of ripping the bandaid off. Plus it grounded the series with stakes for the characters.
Really glad to hear it's getting a second season. I hope it stays a summer show, but bummed we'll have to wait a year.

Thread bump, the second season premiered last night. I really enjoy the show, and forgot to bump this thread yesterday. I am guessing it can be viewed On Demand (or through Hulu).

Never heard of this, but sounds like a Scrubs wannabe.

Scrubs was a comedy that had a few dramatic overtones.
This show is a straight medical drama. I mean there might be a few comic moments like in any other drama, but this is nothing like Scrubs. It's closer to Grey's Anatomy with less estrogen.

I was t able to keep I with this in a weekly basis, but found time to work through season 2 on the DVR.
I like that this show is still in the smaller season bucket. It allows the writers the opportunity to keep original stories and shape the characters throughout the season. I also like that each character is in every episode. They aren't always afforded the most to do, but they make an appearance and return strong in a following episode.
The central focus is still TC and Jordan, who had a really turbulent year, but the other characters are each offered some strong individual stories. Overall a really good example of an ensemble show from top to bottom.
I do have a few issues with some plots from the year:
1) Paul pulled a stunt half way through and I feel there would have been and should have bee larger repercussions.
2) I suppose Scott Wolfs main story was handled well, but I hope they keep up with that. Would be good to see lasting repercussions.

'THE NIGHT SHIFT' IS BACK FOR SEASON THREE AND THE OVERNIGHT CREW AT SAN ANTONIO MEMORIAL BECOMES IMMERSED IN A BIZARRE CAR ACCIDENT RESCUE - In the first half of this two-part episode, the night shift crew is back for more action and the gang finds themselves immersed in a life-and-death rescue of a woman gravely injured in a car accident. While TC Callahan (Eoin Macken), Scott Clemmens (Scott Wolf) and Topher Zia (Ken Leung) deal with the situation at the hospital, Drew Alister (Brendan Fehr) is serving time overseas in Afghanistan and he, along with colleague Syd Jennings (recurring guest star Jennifer Beals, "Proof"), have to figure out a way around the cultural divide to treat a young Afghani woman. Jordan Alexander (Jill Flint) has recruited Shannon Rivera (Tanaya Beatty, "Lewis and Clark") to the night shift team and the recent med school graduate is eager to prove herself, but her spunky, outspoken nature may not sit well with everyone, particularly Paul Cummings (Robert Bailey Jr.). TC's sister-in-law, Annie (Sarah Jane Morris), returns and JR Lemon also stars as Nurse Kenny Fournette. TV-14 L, V

Thanks for the bump. Looking forward to it!
For some reason I thought this was slated to run earlier - February? - I guess they pushed it back to keep with the summer schedule.
I've never watched a lot of medical shows, so I imagine it's nothing original, but it's fun and the cast has a great chemistry.

She tweeted this out:
"Regarding The Night Shift we have parted ways amicably. Krista is no longer but thank you for all the love! It was a great couple of years!"

Maybe she did half a season. Imdb has been wrong before.

For whatever reason, this show seems to work at this time of year. I don't think it would stand a chance during the regular season, but I do enjoy watching it. Shame that Jeananne Goossen ( I had to look her up too) is leaving, as I liked the banter between her and Brendan Fehr's character. And now I know where I recognized the girl with Alicia Witt on The Walking Dead from this past season.

Not caught up, but enjoying the season.
I didn't realize, but Freddy Rodriguez's character is gone too. Did they send him off last year? I do recall he was trying to get into school.
The mix of military presence, veterans and community seems to be a good theme for this show. I haven't seen that in many other shows, especially the diversity of how returning from theater affects people differently.
