I thought part of the appeal of the show was that a majority of the town folk were simpletons.

I think the shot of the picture of the beach, along with beach noises, was a Barton Fink reference.

It looks like Lester might end up digging his own grave by pestering Malvo. He literally got away with murder, but doesn't seem content to let it go.

So, is this definitely a one-off series? I would love to see more.

I'm pretty sure they're open to another season, but each season is a self-contained story. So similar to True Detective or American Horror Story, where the story and cast changes each season.

There's a theory that the briefcase of money will be the connecting thread for the movie and the show's seasons.

There was also a reference to a "Sioux Falls" incident a few times this season, which doesn't relate to the movie, so there may be a "midquel" season set between the movie and this season.

Which story, the movie or the tv series closely resembles what really happened in real life? Both say based on the true story.

Well, the movie claims it was based on a true story from 1987, while the show claims 2006-2007. In reality, neither is based on a true story.

Neither. There is no real story.

Then why does the opening title says "Based on a True Story"?

Because the movie did. It was the first lie you're told.

Nope. His boss, who had sent him to tell the widow Hess the bad news, was right there.

Again, if this show is supposed to take place in a fictional world where everyone (except the two protagonists) is an idiot, then I guess that's okay. But sometimes it seems like they're supposed to be in the real world (like the funny response to the shootout by Key and Peele's supervisor); in that reality, Lester should have been fired on the spot.

No supervisor there. Who's going to fire him?

Yeah, we didn't see the boss in that scene. It was the Asian co-worker talking with him, then the widow Hess came in.

I saw the boss there, not next to the two of them but standing outside his door across the hall when the widow Hess walked in. I'll have to check the DVR when I get home to be sure.

That's how I remember it, too.

The boss was in the background pulling papers out of a filing cabinet when the widow walked in, but I don't remember seeing him in the background in any other shot.

On one hand, it seems plausible that he got the papers he wanted and went back to his office and shut the door, but he knew Hess' policy lapsed and Lester said that he'd personally tell the widow the bad news. So if he sees her walk into the office in a rage, that seems like the kind of discussion he'd want to be there for. Unless he'd rather Lester get yelled at some more.

As a boss and an employer, let me tell you, when you see drama starting in the workplace, you cdon't turn around and ignore it. You get in front of it and put a stop to it as quickly and quietly as possible.

You see my point is this : I'm okay with a heightened reality if that's the tone of the show. Allyce Beasley as dotty, rhyming secretary Agnes DiPesto works fine on Moonlighting because the show is comedic and whimsical. Put that same character behind a desk in The Wire or Law & Order SVU and you don't buy it. I'm still not sure what the reality of this world is after 8+ hours of TV -- it seems to drift back and forth in a non-consistent way.

I think you are missing the point with the character qualities they are attempting to portray....

Perhaps. It's just my take on things. I'm clearly in the minority here.

For me, it's like in Die Hard, a movie I deeply love. I have one and only one problem with it : The character played by Paul Gleason - Deputy Police Chief Dwayne T. Robinson. He's a dick in Breakfast Club and it works perfectly. He's a dick in Die Hard, and it works for a while. Then Bruce Willis throws a dead body out a window onto Reginald VelJohnson's car to show him that there really is shit going down, but when this Dept Police Chief is notified of what just happened, he says it's "probably just a depressed stockbroker". At that moment, you lose any semblance of reality, even fictional reality - because there's just no way that any policeman would come to that conclusion - and it stands out like a sore thumb as a writer's convenience. Much of the Fargo TV series feels like a bunch of Deputy Police Chief Dwayne T. Robinsons all living together.

The show gave no indication that the guy was his boss. He was going to call the "widow Hess" when Lester volunteered to take it off his plate. Plus, he was content with letting Lester take the brunt of her anger in the first place.

IMDB lists his character's name as "Bo Munk." http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1128363/

Lester works at the Bo Munk Insurance Shop.

Ok. Well even with that, it was clear that he didn't want to deal with her face-to-face.

Actually, my dad had an experience where the owner of the insurance company wouldn't even come out of his office to talk to him. He hid in his office while a sales person tried to bullshit their way around why he had a claim denied. Then when my dad sued him, he refused to come out for a summons.

That's the way it should be. But you haven't worked for some of the dipshits I've worked for. The manager's behavior here isn't implausible at all, and he's pretty consistently throughout the series shown an aversion to conflict.
