GLOW Season 1 - I wasn't sure I was going to stick with this til I realized that Allison Brie was in it. It's been so long since I saw an episode of Community I didn't recognize her. The show is pretty good, but it took a bit for me to get into it since I never watched wrestling at all. The occasional 80s song kept me going though, especially the use of Roxette in the second episode.

All starting from July 4:

Man Down - Netflix. Working on season 2...sometimes I do not get Brit humor and other times I am amazed at how fearless some actors are when it comes to going all-in on a scene that can be very awkward such as the awards show scene. The main character savages someone right before a posthumous award is handed out, a cringe inducing scene that is still very funny and something I might only typically experience in a Brit comedy.

Free Rein Season 2 - Netflix. Completed season 2 over two days.

The Hollow Season 1 - Netflix. I enjoyed it but it is an odd duck of a show. No spoilers, but a certain reveal at the very end of the final ep could have been removed from the episode without changing my opinion of the show. I kind of felt like I was watching the old Dungeons & Dragons animated show which is a big plus in my book.

She's Gotta Have It - Netflix. On episode 3 and I am not sure this show is for me, I can recognize that it is a good show but maybe not my cup of tea.

I've been rewatching through Arrested Development from the beginning over the last few months and am about 4 episodes into season 4 and I forgot how huge a step down it was from the first 3 seasons. Even this new remixed version doesn't make it any less mediocre.

Started Breaking Bad on May 24th and finished it tonight... in there somewhere I watched season 2 of Luke Cage, finished off the last 5 eps of Travelers, and part 5 of The Ranch.

Gonna take a break.

Finished Wings earlier today.
I had never watched it except maybe a few of the ones when Cheers characters showed up.
It was a slow burn. I usually only watched it when I was on the treadmill/stationary bike.

Just Finished S1 of "PREACHER" on Hulu. When it first aired I gave up after the 1st ep but came back once S2 was posted on Hulu. I'm a few eps into S2 and loving this series...

I watched six episodes of Big Mouth over the weekend. The show is pretty funny, but sometimes they take jokes way too far....

Re: Last Show You Binged?

Mash - Hulu. So I have seen every episode at least twice and to this day whenever I visit my parents my mom and I would watch at least two randomly aired episodes before I would go to sleep, but my mom finally cracked open the medicine and martinis dvd box set and informed me that she rewatched from start to finish (well, she is almost on the final stretch of episodes) so I thought it would be neat if I did the same once I saw Hulu had the eps (and the eps appear to be complete and uncensored, so some of the questionable/racy humor that might not make it on the air in today's #metoo climate is all intact, jokes about rape, vibrator's, etc..).

I am not able to watch as fast as my mom but I am up to Season 4 after only maybe 2-3 weeks of watching so I have watched at least 60-70 eps so far. It looks fabulous in HD (even though some scenes with special effects look hilariously bad in HD, such as when Klinger tries to flee camp using a hang glider) and it is such a thrill to be undertaking a chronological watch having never done so prior to this month.

I'm not the biggest MASH fan, but I'm with andicus on this one. The lack of a laugh track on the dvds are fantastic.

Inhumans99 07-26-18 11:09 AM

Re: Last Show You Binged?

Andicus, Michael, there is no laugh track removal as these seem to be uncut episodes that originally aired on the FOX network (or at least FOX supplied the eps to Hulu).

I have to say that other than some of attempts at special effects and obvious green screen scenes that are just straight up ugly looking in HD the rest of the show is beautiful (the detail of the environment in the Rainbow Bridge episode is just a pleasure to look at) and the background laughs fade into the background when I watch so many eps in a row and am paying some attention to my tablet.

What really is a bit shocking is how mean-spirited some of the digs at characters like Frank Burns were, and how often you would hear Hawkeye say something like I hope to run into and out of Nurse Baker/Jones, etc. many times later tonight (jokes like that were for some reason not noticed by me before and when I was younger went right over my head).

This show was edgy for its time and might still be considered more edgy than even some of the stuff that shows up today in comedies on FX and HBO.

If you took the hardcore language and any nudity/sex out of many basic cable/paid premium channel comedies you would be left with shows that are as edgy as a beach ball, that is not at all edgy (I was trying to think of a cooler way to say many modern comedies use language/sex as crutch but I think my point still stands).

Anyway, sorry for the thread digression.

Still watching, now at least 60-70% through season 4.

Re: Last Show You Binged?

Been catching up on a lot of stuff this summer. Most recently I have tackled the following:

The Last Man on Earth: Season 4 - Really hope we someday get a wrap up movie. One of the shows I'll miss the most.

The Mick: Season 2 - Loved how dark this show could get.

Fresh Off The Beat: Season 4 - Tied with Black-ish and Speechless as my current favorite ABC comedy.

The Gifted: Season 1 - Wow! As someone who has been finding certain superhero shows difficult to get through these days, I was not expecting to love this as much as I did.

The Bold Type: Season 1 - Fun Freeform show! Love the interactions between the three ladies.

Con Man: Season 2 - Finally caught Season 2 when SyFy aired them over Comic-Con week. Love the cast and the cameos. I could mostly handle the cringe-worthy situations Ray gets into.

Better Things: Season 2 - Never laugh out loud funny for me, but I get sucked into the stories every time I start an episode. Pamela Adlon has never been better.

Claws: Season 2 - This show is batshit crazy. A fun summer show.

Rise: Season 1 - Not many favorable opinions on this forum, but Jason Katims made this worth it for me. I would have gladly watched a second season

Mistresses: Season 1-2- Always meant to catch this when it was airing. Another really fun, soapy summer show. I'm a few episodes into season 3 and I do not think I'm going to like the casting changes.

snip

Yeah, the laugh track really stands out when you're used to watching without it. If you've only seen the show with it, I'm sure it wouldn't be as bad, as you mentioned.

Did you end up liking the show? I stepped away from the series after the early reveal and
Spoiler:
rescue of the kidnapped women (a great jump out of your seat moment when the detectives first see them through the glass)
but had no regrets finishing up the last few episodes in a binge a few months back. It had a fairly quiet ending considering the path the show took to get from point A to point B.

I did like that it was a one and done adaptation of Harlan Coben's book and I would say I enjoyed it more than Safe (another Harlan Coben Netflix show) which is also worth a watch.

I enjoyed it overall, though I did feel that it kind of meandered too much in the middle episodes, especially considering that
Spoiler:
pretty much every lead they followed was a red herring. The ultimate reveal of the mystery was clever, but still kind of felt a bit underwhelming, considering the other possibilities.

Still, there are some good character moments and the ending felt emotionally satisfying.

I have Safe on my watch list, I'll get around to it eventually.

Re: Last Show You Binged?

MASH - Hulu. Picked back up on my MASH watch and am now up to Season 5 episode 2 (Bug Out part 2).

Speaking of, one of the episodes I watched last night is the one where Hawkeye buys a bunch of garbage from Frank Burn's garbage auction and dumps it on the general who gets folks killed by going on dangerous recovery runs and something I have not noticed prior to watching in HD is how disgusting the garbage was when it splatted on the general in his jeep.

The garbage was all wet and slimy and just really gross to look at while it just mostly looked like a bunch of leafy greens in standard def.

I also continue to be amazed at some of the humor in this show that would get folks in an uproar if certain words/jokes made their way into a modern broadcast network comedy.

In one of the episodes I saw last night Colonel Potter makes a comment about an Italian sissy (I forget the context) and hoo boy...a certain segment of the population would be calling for boycotts of MASH if it were airing today.

Surprised I am already up to season 5 but also thrilled because shows come and go on HULU all the time (MASH was also on Netflix a few years back) so it most likely means I will complete my project of seeing every episode of Mash in HD before it is yanked from the airwaves again.
