Modern Family - "Message Received" - 5/7/14

WIRES CROSS BOTH INTENTIONALLY AND UNINTENTIONALLY, ON ABC'S "MODERN FAMILY"

"Message Received" - Jay, Gloria and Manny challenge each other to step outside their comfort zone and try something new. Mitch and Cam's wedding is getting too big and costly so they resort to selling a couple of their prized possessions, and the kids play a joke on Phil and Claire, on "Modern Family," WEDNESDAY, MAY 7 (9:00-9:31 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

Mitch and Cam was blah as usual. Rehashing the idea that Jay is uncomfortable with the gay wedding seemed forced too.

I did like Phil/Claire/Kids stuff though. Nice call back to the door lock.

Agree with all that.

Another blah episode for me. My wife was laughing like crazy. She still loves the show and with its popularity I know I'm in the minority as being blasé about it now.

Hate Mitch and Cam, not because they are gay, but because they are horrible characters that are not funny. Loved the prank call, that was great. Not a fan of the Jay thing, but obviously he'll be at the wedding, they'll make up, etc. In the season finale, they'll probably drop another bomb and have another adoption come through.

Hi guys, me again. I didn't understand something Claire said.

Phil: I'm sorry. It was a knee-jerk reaction.
Claire: You got that half right!

"You got that half right"?

She meant it was a jerk reaction.

(About Claire's old boyfriend)
Haley: Why'd you break up with him? Dad?
Phil: Let's just say he took his eye off the ball and struck out. So I stepped up to the plate and nailed her in the cheap seats.

Really? I thought that joke was so forced and sloppy that it was cringe-worthy.

Even though they defaulted to homophobia in the end, Jay had a point regarding their ridiculous wedding. Most couples go overboard on the wedding.

That said, I'm hoping the next episode features Jay having a heart-to-heart with Pepper. Even before Jay got hammered, he clearly got along with Pepper and Mitchel's friends. A Jay & Pepper friendship would be a nice dynamic for this show.

I like the development of Jay's character in this episode. It shows the truth of this world we live in. There are still old people that are not used to accepting gays like we are.

That's what bothered me about the episode. Jay being embarrassed about the wedding just doesn't go with how we've gotten to know him. Suddenly he's a Homophobe that's not comfortable with his son's lifestyle?

I think Jay's more uncomforable with the spectacle of the wedding and the fact that all his buddies were invited as well.

Yeah. It's more about the ridiculous and embarrassing pageantry. Heck, the whole episode before that final moment made a huge point of how overblown and asinine their wedding is becoming. I took Jay's comments as more of a foot planted firmly in mouth situation. He just kept saying the wrong thing. Lots of times the show uses that type of situation to comedic effect. This time it ended up being unintentionally hurtful.

And let's face it, a father-son dance is not out of the realm of possibilities in Cam & Mitch's ridiculous excesses for their wedding.

That's how I took it too.
