re: David Letterman - Shows, Projects, and News
I'm going to miss the hell out of Letterman because I grew up with the guy, but Colbert was easily the best choice for the job and I actually am excited for the new show despite the fact it means no more Letterman and the official end of my youth.
This is better than anything Fallon has ever done: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/cs6r6Ud0GGU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
re: David Letterman - Shows, Projects, and News
The only reason the late night genre is relevent anymore is so The Eric Andre Show and Comedy Bang Bang have something to parody.

re: David Letterman - Shows, Projects, and News
Did Conan try or lobby or ever end in the conversation to get the CBS late night job?
Is he holding out for FOX? I heard the FOX affiliates would rather show Seinfield or Friends reruns because they are more profitable than a late night talk show? WTF? I wonder if it is a good or bad thing that Conan is hosting the 2014 MTV Movie awards? He must still have some appeal for the youths if he wants to host a awards show where the Hunger Games Catching Fire will win all the awards and next year he will do a show at Comic-Con. http://media.nj.com/entertainment_im...ed18_large.jpg |
re: David Letterman - Shows, Projects, and News
The same for Conan, as I never thought he could branch out to the masses. I had a few friends that LOVED him, but it wasn't enough to carry an 11:30 timeslot for NBC. Only time will tell, but I have to say that I have questioned many of the decisions these executives made in latenight and its amazing because they are usually wrong! Plus NBC really cut him off at the knees by keeping Leno around. That basically told the audience that NBC didn't have any faith in Conan whatsoever. Seriously how in the hell was Jeff Zucker ever allowed to run a network? Did Conan try or lobby or ever end in the conversation to get the CBS late night job? I heard the FOX affiliates would rather show Seinfield or Friends reruns because they are more profitable than a late night talk show? Another problem was that the age of the affiliates are upper 50's to 60's and they just don't get Conan's humor. When Fox was pushing really hard for him thee executives wouldn't budge because they didn't get his appeal. However they did say they were on board if Jay Leno was going to get an 11:35 show. |
re: David Letterman - Shows, Projects, and News
Colbert had the best moment on Fallon's premiere, the gauntlets been thrown down

I'm always amazed that Colbert got into Henry Kissinger's office for that Daft Punk bit.

re: David Letterman - Shows, Projects, and News
I've never watched Colbert and I stopped watching Letterman when he left NBC. David was never as funny as he was from 1982-1988 on Late Night or even his morning show in 1980.

Ellen has a funny program, but I can't see CBS programming a sadistic lesbian in that slot. Guests come on that show to pitch their product, not to be told that their pet sloth is backstage. |

It's like each successive host of Late Night has gotten more generic and safe than the previous.
It would be nice to once again see a show that experiments with the format the way NBC Letterman did . That was an exciting fun time when you never knew what was gonna happen whether it was rotating the screen 360° or slightly speeding up the show or hosting from the back of a flatbed truck. Cripes Dave even had a camera strapped to a monkey. That show was a blast. |

With Carson, Letterman and Leno gone, Late Night is dead to me. Conan and Arsenio are both shadows of their former selves, and the rest of the field is unwatchable. |

One of my favorite Letterman shows was when it was too hot and he sent the audience home and did the whole show from his air-conditioned offices. His guests were Teri Garr and Richard Lewis. He spent the whole show trying to get Garr to get into his private bathroom, get naked and take a shower. She finally relented and the show ends with her in the shower saying to Dave, "I hate you." Classic. :D |

FYI, Colbert is the guest tonight.

Love the good ole days of Carson and Letterman back to back. |

Then, to thank her, he ran a solid week of Teri Garr episodes.

re: David Letterman - Shows, Projects, and News
Neil Patrick Harris turned it down:
Neil Patrick Harris, 'Late Show' Host? Neil Patrick Harris nearly tucked you in at night. During an interview with Howard Stern on Wednesday, the "How I Met Your Mother" star revealed that CBS offered him the hosting gig on "The Late Show" after David Letterman's departure. The actor, 40, met with CBS CEO Les Moonves and CBS Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler to discuss the possible opportunity, but he ultimately turned it down. "In that instance, I felt like I knew what my skill sets were and I kind of knew what it is that I wanted to do after ['How I Met Your Mother'], so I was surprised he pitched me that idea," Harris dished. Although he considered the idea for a minute, NPH declined the position because he thought he would "get bored" with the format of late-night talk shows. "I don't have any interest in doing monologue, commercial, sketch, guest, guest musical act, goodnight," he said. Moonves also discussed the possibility of having the Tony nominee take over "The Late Late Show," which is losing host Craig Ferguson, in the 12:30 a.m. time slot. (According to recent reports, comedian Joel McHale is currently in talks to take over for Ferguson.) "It's still nightly. You're still coming up with the same content and now you're just getting bitter that no one's watching it," Neil said. But the one project that does pique Neil's interest is a weekly variety show. |

I think Vince Vaughn would be good int he role.
Just saying. |

Really, that kind of persuasion is how a lot of [damn good] modern porn plays out. I watch The Colbert Report daily and I really don't know what the "real" Colbert is like. |
David Letterman last show May 20 2015
I just heard the last date announced on the radio.
I'll add a link when I get a chance. Sorry if a repost. |

It's too bad Letterman hates Leno so much. That would have gotten huge ratings and been awkward if he'd had Jay on the final week sometime.

Who was Dave's first guest on CBS? I could see that person being the final guest.

As for the Letterman/Leno feud, from what i've read it's over. You have to remember that these guys were friends back in their stand up days. I wouldn't be shocked to see Leno come on as a guest before it's over. |

Re: Dave Letterman announces he will retire (Last show 5/20/15) / Colbert signed as h
After Letterman steps down I'm pretty much only going to watch Conan at this point. I don't really care for Colbert much, he's just never really been appealed to me with his style. He might grow on me once he's not doing his schtick from The Colbert Report but even without that I just don't really know how much I care for him. Fallon is okay but I can't watch him on a regular basis without getting tired of him. I also don't really care for Seth Meyers. Craig Ferguson is actually probably my favorite host in late night at the moment but he'll be done next week.
|
Re: Dave Letterman announces he will retire (Last show 5/20/15) / Colbert signed as h
See, I'm a huge fan of Colbert, and I never ever found Letterman funny, or amusing. I actually kind of hate him, since he comes of as a bit of an asshole. I always thought he was smug, unfunny and kind of a douche. So I'm actually really stoked to be getting rid of him, and replaced by someone I actually like.

Re: Dave Letterman announces he will retire (Last show 5/20/15) / Colbert signed as h
I dunno there's just something about Dave I've always liked. He does come off as a crabby old man a lot of the times and maybe somewhat of an asshole but just something about him appeals to me. I like his somewhat dry style of humor and I think that he's one of the best interviewers in late night along with Craig Ferguson when he's interested in the guest. You can tell when Dave doesn't really care for the guest too much, but when someone he's genuinely interested in is on I think he comes off as one of the most sincere people on tv. I think especially as he's gotten older he doesn't care about the Hollywood types so much unless its someone he's friends with or interests him and he doesn't really feign interest very well. I can see where that might be off putting to some but I like that he's not phony.
