To answer your question...

Yes. Eugene has no knowledge of it whatsoever. He has no real survival skills, and needed something to make himself "marketable" to someone. Hence that. I haven't read the comics, but I've read recaps. And yeah, you were that close.

My only problem with Eugene on the show is that...

of the way the actor chose to portray him, it seriously tipped the hat that he is full of shit. In the comics, he seems much smarter, and doesn't come across as such a simpleton redneck geek (mullet aside), so you really don't know this until he comes clean. And technically, he's only full of crap about knowing what caused and how to fix the zombie apocalypse. He is smart other than that.

Eugene on the show comes across as mildly autistic, or at least with some level of Asperger's.
