Community - "VCR Maintenance And Educational Publishing" - 3/13/14

03/13/2014 (08:00PM - 08:30PM) (Thursday) : JEFF, SHIRLEY AND HICKEY DISCOVER A HIDDEN CACHE OF PRISTINE TEXTBOOKS - ABED AND ANNIE EMPLOY AN INTERACTIVE VCR GAME TO DECIDE ON A NEW ROOMMATE - "BREAKING BAD" CREATOR VINCE GILLIGAN AND BRIE LARSON GUEST STAR - When Jeff (Joel McHale), Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown) and Professor Hickey (Jonathan Banks) happen upon a hidden cache of textbooks, the discovery leads to some interesting power shifts as the group struggles with how to monetize their windfall. Meanwhile, Abed (Danny Pudi) and Annie (Alison Brie) decide it's time for a new roommate. Abed wants his friend Rachel (guest star Brie Larson, "United States of Tara") to move in, while Annie wants her brother to move in. When they decide to play an old VCR game to determine the winner, things get a little intense. Ken Jeong, Gillian Jacobs and Jim Rash also star. TV-14 L

The Dean dressed up as a peanut and rapping was one of the best Dean moments in the show's history.

Vince Gilligan! Too lazy to look this up, but I wonder if he has any prior acting experience.

Good episode.

Also, Gina Gershon is so fucking hot. Can't believe she'll be 52 in June!

Mitch Hurwitz last episode, Vince Gilligan this one. I'm glad they took my suggestion to start casting the creators of my favorite shows seriously. I look forward to the eventual Alan Spencer ep.

Loved seeing Vince Gilligan. And Abed's third-act apology in the rain.

My wife was rolling at the VCR game. She had one when she was younger (with a cryptkeeper guy), and said it was spot on.

Good episode.
I couldn't get over how young him and Gershon looked.

Great episode. I wish we could get more seasons with Banks as a cast member. He's a perfect addition.

Loved that the couch covering seemed to be the same pattern as the Dreamatorium.

Re: Community - "VCR Maintenance And Educational Publishing" - 3/13/14

This is what I would describe as a "perfectly acceptable" episode of Community. When the show is long gone it will probably won't be in the top 30 or 40 episodes anyone remembers, but it made me laugh and sometimes that's enough. I thought the b-story was a little weak and could have had a little more to offer, but it was ok.

I may sound like a broken record, but once again, in my opinion the dean is being used perfectly this year. He's hilarious just about every time he shows up, but he's not overused. Also, they've really toned down some of the more outrageous aspects of his character (which were funny at first, but got old). The peanut rap was great and I thought the scene at the end when he was writing a new rap was even funnier. Chang's been great too, although I wish they'd do a better job incorporating his (and Jeff's) role as a teacher. I'd love to see an episode with Jeff, Chang, Hickey and Duncan doing something together.

One other thing...it was good to see Pavel back even if he didn't do/say much. He's one of my favorite recurring characters.

The Dean's rap might be one of my favorite things ever on Community.

Dean was a Payday not a peanut.

This season has been great.

That vcr game was crazy. I lived during the age of tape but never saw one of those games.

I thought this episode was great. Even though the theme episodes are high points, I really appreciate these more scaled back episodes. It's like a breather episode, while still being really funny. This might be my favorite episode of the season so far.

I'm also amused that Annie is always rocking business casual slacks now.

Those VCR games were the worst!

This back stretch of episodes have been fantastic. I liked Troy but the episodes seem to breathe better with fewer cast members. I think they might have needed to pare this cast down a couple of years ago.

Surprised no mention yet of Paul Williams showing up as the fence for the text books. Nearly spit up my drink when I saw him. Overall, a pretty solid episode.

If I didn't know it was her, I never would have guessed she also played Envy Adams in "Scott Pilgrim".
